THURSDAY, OCTOBER, 21, 1926 THE MV77HIGAN DAILY . PAGE SEVEN . ., THURSDY. OCOBER 2. 192aT -IFMT 1-TaflANflATa TO PLAY CRUCIAL GkID GAMES STAR BADGER HALFBACK ASIYI I[RS J THROUGHOUT COUNTRY SATURDAY REcOVERS FRIM INJURY Notre )ane-Northaestern Clash Will favorites on A bas of early season , BUNIN INITIAL I Serne as One of Leading Testsa While Michigan and Illinois footballI teams, two of the strongest contenders for the Conference championship, bat-j ile for supremacy Saturday on Ferryt field, several other games are sched-- uled which will serve to show the rela- tive strength of many teams through- out the country. Notre Dame will meet Northwestern at Evanston in a game which should{ definitely test the strength of the Purple eleven. The Wildcats hold ar 20-0 victory to their credit over In- diana, as well as a clean pre-season slate, while the Irish defeated Minne- sota recently by the decisive score of 20-7. In the other games of note, Indiana. which held Northwestern scoreless for three quarters, will meet Wisconsin at Madison and Iowa will engage Ohio' State at Columbus in 'the Buckeyes' first Big Ten clash of the year. Purdue, the team which has been booted all over Stagg field by Chicago for years, has an opportunity to' avenge some of these overwhelming! defeats. Purdue held Wisconsin to a scoreless tie last wvek which indi- cates that the Boilermakers are a powerful aggregation, and Jimmy Phe- lan's team will go to Chicago primed to the highest pitch for a supreme ef- fort. The Missouri Valley conference, now being led by Missouri, will see that team in action against Iowa State atf Ames while Nebraska and Coach Cap-a pon's Kansagi eleven will clash at~ Lawrence. Oklahoma will await the' invasion of the Kansas Aggies, win- ners over the Kansas team ,on their( home field, while Drake and Missis-1 sippi will battle it out at Des Moines. The Pacific coast will see much ac-1 tion this week when Southern Cali- fornia and California come together at Berkeley. The Golden Bears, minus the coaching services of the late Andyj Smith who made them football. cham- pions throughout the far west, go into the game with their opponents heavy showings. Stanford and Oregon will be brought together for a contest on Ore- Igon's gridiron and Washington, last year's champion of ithe Pacific Coast conference, will play Washington State at Seattle. The results of these games should go a long way in de- termining the strongest prospective I team for the championship. Harvard, the team that suffered two successive defeats under the tutelage of Arnold Ilorween, their new coach, made amends in part by the decisive beating which they gave to William and Mary College Saturday. The Crimson team can entirely wipe out their early record by a defeat of thej Dartmouth eleven, whose defeat by{ Yale was the first in three years. I Yale, now looked upon as one of the strongest teams along the Atlantic coast will take on the Brown outfit at New Haven. The Elis are not tak- ing this game seriously but are point- ing to the game with Army to be play- ed on Oct. 30, and some of the injured veterans who did not perform against Dartmouth will be sent into the fray for practice.t Both service teams, looking forward to their Thanksgiving date on Soldiers 'field, Chicago, will meet teams of tested strength. The Colgate eleven is booked to play the Navy at Anna-1 polis, while the Army is scheduled for a game with Boston at West Point. Only one other battle of importance is slated for Saturday, this is between Sewanee and Alabama at Birmingham. The Alabama team seems to be head- ed for another Southern title a,nd this will be the most important battle in the South. In the less important games Georgia will meet Vanderbilt at Nashville, and Georgia Tech and Washington will de- cide their issue at Atlanta. Pennsyl- vania, winner over Chicago by a wide margin, will play Williams, PrincetonI is to meet Lehigh at Palmer stadium, and Carnegie Tech and Pittsburgh will engage in their annual clash at Pitts- burgh. 1I Captain Briggs, Iskenderian, Horn- berger, Lamont, Monroe, Hill, Whit- more, Aubrey and Winslow will com- pose the Varsity cross country team that will run against the Purdue har- riers here Saturday morning, it was announced yesterday by Coach Steve' Farrell. Coach Ed O'Connor, of Pur- due, has not announced the names of the men who will run against the Var- sity and it is not expected that he will do so before the start of the race. The race, which is the first Confer- ence test of both teams, will start; from the Yost field house at 10:45 0'- clock and will terminate at the Ann Arbor Golf club. The distance to be covered by the teams will be fonr miles. Although handicapped by a Oater- soaked course, the Michigan team at- ' ...tained comparativelf good time in a trial race last Saturday, covering the three and one-half miles distance in Doyle Harmon 18:35.
