T -- Michigan Association of Writers Has Many Notables Included in Its Membership SPEAKER ISRHETORICIAN' Lawrence H-. Conrad, instructor in the department of rhetoric of the U~ni- versity of Michigan, will be the prin-I cipal speaker at the annual meeting of the Michigan Authors association to be held Thursday in Detroit. The subject of the talk is "Why Write ? The speech will present an' analysis of the creative impulse and will attempt to justify 'literary en-' deavor. In an interview Mr. Conrad stated that as far as he knows, no one has ever° made "a full analysis of the sources from which literature springs, and lie is making one on the basis of his own writing experience and his' studies in rhetoric and psychology. Mr. Conrad is known as the author of "Temper", said by critics to be the most significant novel of American industry published in recent years. He is also the author of a psychological work on writing, "The Author's Mind". "Several years spent as a day laborer in the automobile factories of Detroit are 'the basis for Mr. Conrad's novel. He is' now preparing a triology which he intends as a comprehensive inter- pretation of Ameriman industrial life. Included in the membership of the organization are James Oliver Cur- wood, novelist; Robert Frost, poet;# Harold Titus, novelist; R~res. Clarencek Cook Little; Prof. Thomas E. Rankin, of the rhetoric department; Prof. John Scholl, of the German department and Prof. Solomon Gingerich, of the Eng- lish department.
