Kraus of the summer session. Ma' features which are not offered during the regular school' term are listed in the announcement Enroll- ment for the Biological station in nrthern Michigan has already ex- ceeded capacity, although an addition- al 20 students are to be included in the registration this year. Instruction in library methods will be given again this year under the direction of Librarian William W. Bishop. Courses in public health and hygiene, an exclusive summer session feature; are also included in the bule- tin. Members of the Michigan oaci- ing staff will conduct the sumnner coaching- school which will be under the supervision of Fielding LI. YoSt, director of intercollegiate athletic. Prominent educa ors from various sections of the country wil give se- ral demonstration curses in the Uni- versity high school in science' read- ing, English, social studies, Latin, mathematics, and shop. "crThlose courses," stated Dean Kraus "will ~give the classroom teachers an unex- celled opportunity to become familia with the most modern methods in the field of subject matter." According to Dean Kraus, the great- er part of the subjects taught in the School of Education Auring the sum- mer are designated especially for teachers Ivho, employed during the year, are unable 'to increase their knowledge during the regular term. Vacation W ork h Advocated By DeanrLCooley "In order that engineers 1)e compet- c t to judge other things, look out- side, your specialized field, because all work, no matter what it is, is edmu- cating," urged Dean Mortimer E. Cool- ey, in an address before the freshman engineering class yesterday, in avo- eating that men of that class go to work during vacation instead of tak- ing a vacation. The necessity of learing to think forj oneself, and being competent to judge cther fields is greater, at present, ac- cording to Dean Cooley, because this i. eriod is experiencing one of the strangest drives of organized propo- gandla that this world has ever known. Ilie decried the modern newspaper ed- ~icrial which people are expected to "swallow." "People are not doing enough think-I ag anyhow," declared Dean Cooley, "and are content to be lead around by the nose." Russiani propoganda was given as an example of Dean Cooley'; d c claratibns. The only remedy, according to Dean Cooley, is to collect all the facts pos- saible on a subject, think it over for a lrong time, and then draw your own conclusions. Michigan is more than well repre- sented in the Far East in the forestry profession, saidl S. M. Mathews, forest conservator to the government of British North Borneo, in an interview yesterdlay.. Mr. Mathews has just re- cently returned from his station in the wilds of North Borneo where he is in charge of the British government! forestry service. "Several Michigan men" he con- tinued, "have gone to the East, some have died, one was killed by natives, a few have returned and others oc- cupy important posts. Of the few Michigan men of my acquaintance in the East perhaps the following are some that I have kept track of: MV.j Donald Knapp, '10, was employed in the Philippine forest service for sev- eral years and then entered the em-I ployee of the U. S. Rubber company where he is now in charge of the Sum- a tra office. Herbert G. Stout, '09, was also in the Philippine forest service and later entered the cocoanut plant- king lbusiness. E. H. Pjoundl, '07, was located in Singapore and died .froma tropical disease in Hong Kong in 1916. H-arry D. Everett, '04, was killed by i natives in the Philippines in 1908. I' followed him in the same territory but was unable to find out the cause of his death. "There, are many opportunities in. the East," declared Mr. Mathews inj conclusion, "especially in the rubber business. The figures of the investi- gating commission headed by Seere- LayHoover show that today there is a 1,000,000 acre shortage of rubber. Seventy five percent of the rubber pro- duced is used in the United States. I Seventy percent of the rubber growing land is controlled by the British so that new fields will have to be planted by the American interests. Mr. Mathews for 11 years was en- gaged in exploring and mapping the territory of North Borneo. Five years were spent in the organization of a forestry department for the North Borneo government of which he is in charge.
