SATURDAY, INTAY S, 1926 THE. MICHIGAN DAILY PACT, : Irv" S A T U D A Y M A Y 8, 926 H E I C H I A N A I L wYrFtiYw' wWrti - HOFFREFUSES TO COMPETE iN WEST (By Associated Press) PASADENA, Calif., May 7.-Charlie hoff tonight was still riding the "char- lie horse" in his shoulder as his main reason for refusing to compete with his vaulting pole in the meet at San Francisco tomorrow. The threat received by telegraph from the A. A. U. that if he did not go to San Francisco he would be bar- red from further competition in this country, had up until this evening failed to jolt Hoff. The Norwegian said he was not in physical condition to compete in the Golden Gate meet. T "I am not going to San Francisco. I stated my side of the case in a tele- gram to New York day before yester- day and I prefer not to answer ques- tions at this time as to my proposed appearance in Los Angeles May 15," was the substance of his remarks. GENE TUNINEY REFUS CHANCEl AT CHAMPION' (By Associated Press), NEW YORK, May 7.-Gene Tunney's claim to recognition as the leading heavyweight contender received a set- back today when the state athletic commission refused to accept his formal challenge for a title match with Jack Dempsey on the grounds that Harry Wills has prior claim. Nevertheless, the attempt by rep- resentatives of Tunney to file the challenge is interpreted as another move in Tex Rickard's campaign toI displace Wills in favor of Tunney as; an opponent for Dempsey in a title bout in September. A blanket challenge in Tunney's be- half for a bout with any other leadingI heavyweight contender, but prefer-, ably Wills, may. be filed next week,. his representative said.
