Neebancal Ind ustry By Prof. Worley ENDS LECTURE SERIES Emphasizing the imnportance of transportation as our greatest me- chanical industry, Prof. John S. Wor- ley, part time lecturer in the civil en- gineer ing department, summarized the growth and influence of Am- can carriage facilities in the final ad- dress of a series on '"The History of Transportation," given before stu- dents and faculty members of the de- partment. Progressive sl ides were shown which portrayed the gradual develop- mnent of railroads from 1830 to 1890. By the, end of the third decade in this period, it was revealed, the territory east of" the Mississippi river was fair- ly well covered with a network ofl lines." During the next ten years, many lextehsions were mad'e to the West. The railroads reached the linel of advancing population, and thus as- sisted in the settlement of that re-t gion. t To further demonstrate the import- ance of the entire transportation in- dustry; the speaker pointed out that more than one-seventh of the total tiealthi of the country is invested in industries connected with 'carrying. freight and passengers.
