Balloon Illace To Address Aeronautical Society At Meeting Tuesday Night HOLDS NATIONAL TITLES Latest developments in lighter-ihan- air craft will be reviewed by Ralph H. Upson, chief engineer of the Air- craft Development corporation of De-- troit, before a meeting of the Aero- nautical society at the Union Tues- day night. The Aircraft Development I corporation Is negotiating with the goyernment at the present time for a contract calling for the construction of an all-metal dirigible. Mr. Tipson has spent most of his life in the field of aeronautics, mak- ing an intensive rsearch in areody- namics and airship engineering during the six years preceding the outbreak of the World war in 11114. In 1913, 1919, and 1921 he won the American national balloon race; in 1913 he gain- ed first place for the- United States as her representative in the interna- tional races. Mr. Upson also flew the first United States Navy coast patrol airship in a demonstration flight from Chicago to Akron. At the beginning of the World war, -Mr. Upson was placed in charge of the e~igineering department of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber company. During the six years he held this p0- sition the company prgduced ipost of the balloons and airships used by th United States in her military opera- tions. Mr. Upson served the government a~ a. member of the- United States Navy design mission to Europe at the close of the war. In 1922 he was made chai'rman of the lighter-than-air divi- sion of the Aeron~uticaI Safety Code commission of the flu reau of Stand- ards.
