FRELSMEN WI IN OIO CARNITAL - - Michigan track men returned from the Ohio relay carnival richer by ten gold watches and a number of second and third place medals. These were accrued by winssin the mile and half mile relay events, the,.100 yard dash and the triathlon. The place positions came in the high jump, pole vault, and the 100 yard dash. Coach Stephen Farrell concentrated on the Ohio meet with very satisfac- tory results although a team of sixi were sent to compete at the Kansas games the same day. Charles Hoyt, Varsity trainer, accompanied the team on the Ohio trip while Coach Farrell took charge of the Kansas delegation. The four mile team took a surprise beating from Illinois at Kansas, the Wolverines were favorites in this event but lost out in a hotly contested race. Capt. Freyberg, runn-ing anchor, was defeated by a scarce two yards after a neck and neck sprint with the Ilhini runner. In the individual events Phil Northrup won a fourth place in the pole vault despite the fact that he went over 12 feet 9 inches, the highest mark of his vaulting career. Northrup also scored a third place in the javelin throwing 184 feet which is below his usual standard. Dick Doyle took second place in the discus. Harry Hawkins, competing at the Ohio carnival, won the triathlon which con- sists of the hammer throw, shot putt and discus. Probably the biggest upset' at the Ohio games was the 100 yard dash where Michigan runners made a com- plete slam. Hester, Kelly, and Leshin- sky finished in the order named.
