I AWARD LETTEHS TO ENTIRE SWIM TEAMI Wolverine Team Sets Big Ten Record By Placing Me In Every Event TO LOSE THREE MEN Coach Matt Mann awarded his en- tire squad of 12 men the Varsity "M" award for their work on the Michi- gan swimming team during the past season, according to an announcement made late yesterday by the Wolverine tank coach. The men who were rewarded for their performance in Conference com- petition are: Capatin Gow, Dunnakin, Whittingham, Samson, Darnall, Batter, Shorr, John Halsted, Robert Halsted, Starret, Harrison, and Mayer. All of the men to receive the Var- sity award placed in the Conference championship meet here Saturday or won one first place or two seconds in a dual meet on the Michigan schedule this season. Mayer received an "M" as a member of the water polo team. Michigan's 1926 swimming team holds the unique distinction of being the only team on record to place in every event in a Big Ten Conference championship swimming meet, Minne- sota's team, which won the Big Ten title with 41 points, won five first places, but failed to place in all events, missing a place in the 440 free style t swim. Coach Mann has promise of having a championship contending team niext season, losing only 3 of the 12 letter- men through graduation at the end of this.semester. The three men who will be lost to the team are: Captain Gow, who swam in the 50 yard free style and on the relay teams, Dunna- kin, a 440 and 220 yard swimmer, and Whittingham, a veteran breast stroke man. 1?U STUDENTS COMPETE IN UNION TOURNES Figures released from the Union showv that more than 120 students competed in the recent series of tour- naments held in the Union billiard room and bowling alleys. Bowling drew the highest number, 63 of the pin-topplers entering in that pastime, while 59 of the pool players vied for, high honors. Three divisions, composed each of the indoor sports. The bowlers were divided into the singles and doubles groups with a consolation tournament for those singles players eliminated in the first round. In the singles finals Mesner defeated Fordham with the fair score of 605, and in the con- solation Richardson beat Seider in a Boor match. The doubles combination of Res- man-Fordham triumphed over the Doyle-Bumpus pair with a score of 1106. after a sensational match in which Doyle crashed the high record for the meet by tumbling 265 pins in hik second game.I In the billiard contests 29 *enered the straight pool contests in which Metier beat Fifield in the finals by a score of 150-112; Stark conquered Briggs in the straight rail finals by a score of 150-125 in a field of 17 starters; and L'Hereux beat Levy by a score 35-25 in the finals of the three- cushion match in which there were only 11 entrants. The high runs of the three divisions were as follows: Metler ran 14 in the pocket billiards; Briggs ran 15 in the straight rail; and Levy ran 5 in the three-cushion contest. COLUMBUS.-A. L. Meet At Detroit Coach Matt Mann's natators will begin active training again Wednes- day afternoon at the Union pool in! preparation for the A. A. U. champion- ships Saturday at the Detroit Ath- letic club. Mann has entered ten men in these events. Although losing the Big Ten title last Saturday, onehbright spot ap- peared in the swimming horizon, when Robert Wagner, '28, placed second in the senior pentathlon at the Detroit Yacht club, Wagner, although ineli- gible for Big Ten competition due to a Conference ruling, was able to rep- resent Michigan in Detroit in the A. A. U. meet. The men that will make the trip to Detroit Saturday are: Gow, Darnall, Samson, Batter, Wagner, Hughes, Be- nent, R. Halsted, Whittingham, and T. Watson. On the following week- end Darnall, Samson, Bement, and Watson have been entered in the 100 yard free style championships to be held at the Detroit Y. M. C. A. The men receiving M's are Captain Russell Baker, 115 pounds, Edward Solomon, '125 pounds, Alfred Watson, 135 pounds, Andrew Galsterer, 145 pounds, Harold Donohoe, 158 pounds, George Rich, 175 pounds, and Edward George, heavyweight. Donohoe, who won the Conference middleweight crown last Saturday at! Purdue, may be sent to the National Wrestling Championship at Portland I Oregon to compete with the best in the country, according to Keen. I Coach Keen is more than pleased with the work of the wrestlers during the past season and sees the Wolver- ines as probable championship con. tenders next year if all goes well. Every one of the seven letter men will be back next year, and a successful year is looked forward to. In his first season as Varsity coach, Clifford Keen has raised Michigan to a much higher ranking in wrestling. This is especially to -be commented upon bedause he has developed one of the strongest teams in the Big Ten from a squad boasting Captain Baker as its only veteran.
