k PIIILAI)ELPIIIA, Feb. 20.-Persons to whom politics is a sport are
looking forward to this year's senatorial campaign in Pennsylvania as
the most interes~ting in years; others, who take politics more or less seri-
ously, are shaking their heads or smiling grimly.
The interest will be centered on the G. 0. P. primary, in which three
powers in the party will be competing for a senatorial toga and the state
l eadership.
Indication by Con. William S. Vare of Philadelphia that lie will be a
candidate means either that he's trying to whip somebody into line, or
that wine andl beer will be an issue in the campaign.
Congressman Vare is a power in Philadelphia politics. 'By some he
is given the title "Boss." He is a wet. R-ecently lhe presenltedl in the
lcuse an amendlment which would make it legal to manufacture andl sell
2.75 per cent beer.
Sen. GeorgeXWharton Pepper's other opponent in the three-cornered
race is Gifford Pinchot, governor of Pennsylvania. Pinchot is an avowed
bone dry. Senator Pepper says he is for strict enforcement of the Vol-
stead act, although lie is not a pronounced dry.
