MICIGANt~lL f _ . ,..., ., =:Zk 11qu0 eAg n- U ti N wo .,.___ w _. a Hockey Team- To Meet Minnesota In First Game Tonight GOHERS POSSESS POWERFUL SQUADB Barss Makes Change In Lineup; Me. Duff Will Play enter; Reynolds Shifted To Forward PLAY AGAIN SATURDAY Michigan's Varsity hockey team will face the Minnesota puck chaser in the third Conference game of the season at 7:30 o'clock tonight in the Coliseum. Another game will be played with the Gophers tomorrow night at the same time and place. Minnesota is acclaimed to possess a powerful aggregation and both the coming contests should be close and spirited battles. The Gophers stopped off in Lansing on their journey and played a match with the Green and White pucksters last night, arriving in Ann Arbor this morning. Jn their only two Conference match- es the Gophers have scored two ties playing the Badgers in each instance. According to comparative scores, as a result of Michigan's win and tie with Wisconsin last week, the Wol- verines may seem to be the favorites in tonight's game. Both the Badgers and Gophers have superior advan- tages in so far as they have ice at their disposal more regularly than Michigan. Both games in the current1 series should beaexceptionally close and the breaks abobe will doubtless decide the winner.r Coach Barss is Ivery well satisfied with the team's showing to date and feels confident that the new combina- tion with McDuff in place of Levi will1 surpass its last week's achievements._ The lineup in tonight's game will be Captain Reynolds at left wing, Sibil-1 sky at right wing and McDuff at cen- ter with Gabler and Roach at left and right defense respectively, and Weitzel at goal. Captain Reynolds and Mc- Duff may change positions and Hoop- er, Erhart, Denton and Fisher may get " in the fray either on the forward line or at defense. Jones is a capable un- derstudy for Weitzel but to date the latter has played such a sterling game at goal that Jones has had few actual opportunities. Regular practice has been held dur- ing the past week consisting of the individual drill in passing, shooting and in receiving the puck, and team drill in all these departments as well. The offense has been improved no- ticeably in the past few days and that, with the almost impregnable defense, should give the Gophers something to worry about at the Coliseum tonight when the two teams meet. 14 TEAMS QULIFY IN{ FOUL SHOOTING EST Fourteen teams composed of five men each were chosen out of a field of 300 to qualify in the initial round of the interfraternity foul shooting tour- nament. According to the rules of the tour- ney, each team was to enter an unlim- ited number of men, the scores of the best five to count. Theta Chi led the list with an aggregate score of 39 free throws for an average of almost eight shots per man. Phi Lambda Kappa was second on the list only two points behind the leaders. The other qualifiers and their scores are: Delta Chi 34, Sig- ma Alpha M 33, Sigma Phi 32, Beta Theta Pi 31, Phi Kappa Sigma 29, Tau E silon Phi 29, Phi Beta Delta 29, Phi Sigma Delta 29, Delta Alpha Ep- silon 28, Phi Kappa 28, Phi Chi 27, Phi Sigma Kappa 26, Alpha Tau Ome- ga 25. To date there are two' teams tied for first place, and four I sharing third place honors, but the results of the games this week will undoubtedly shuffle the teams and bring the likely title holder to light. Illinois' right to share first place with Wisconsin will be seriously ques- tioned Friday night when the Indians meet the Hoosiers on the Indiana floor. Indiana has been a dangerous contender for the leadership and will have an opportunity to make good their threat with Krueger, Beckwith,. and 'Sponsler performing. Six of the Conference teams will be in action Saturday night, Wisconsin meeting the Purdue five on its home court, Northwestern traveling to Iowa City to encounter the Hawkeyes, and Coach Mather's Wolverines meeting the Buckeyes at Columbus. The Chicago Maroons who defeated the strong Purdue quintet Wednes- day, will meet the Illinois five at Ur- bana Monday night. The Chicago team started the season poorly, but has reached its stride and has proven a stumbling block for many of the supposedly stronger teams in the Con- ference. Wisconsin will meet the Wol- verines in Yost field house Monday. German newspapers complain thatI the United States did not welcome. Huber Houben, the German sprinter, in the manner that he should have been received. Due to the demands of the public the Detroit Ski club is announcing its third ski tourney of the year which will be held at 2 o'clock Sunday on New- berry hill, near Rochester. 3everal students have entered in previous tourneys, and it is the hope of the club to have a dozen entrants from Ann Arbor in this meet. The tourney will take place on theE club's new all steel slide and will have as an added attraction th'e Hull brothers. Henry Hull broke the world's record in ski jumping last year at Reavelstock, B. C. with a leap of 229; feet. Snow had to be imported for the last meet which was a success de- spite this added difficulty. Should the weather become cold after the recent snow it is expected this tournament will outrival the others. IOWA CITY.-Twenty high schools have entered 136 men in the fifth an- ; naul Iowa interscholastic track and meet to be staged in the Iowa armory Monday. BASEBALL TRYOUTS' All sophomores desiring to try out for baseball manager assist- antships are requested to report at 5 o'clock at Yostdfield house during the remainder of this week and the early part of next week. E. M. DIESTER, Manager. Little Known Of Purple Strength; Wolverine Lineup Still Undecided MICHIGAN EXPECTS WIN Accepting the reverse at Indiana as past history, Coach Keen's wrestling squad is devoting all its energy towards preparing for the Northwest- ern meet, tomorrow night at Yost field house. Little is known of the true strength1 of the Purple outfit as they are a new team and have been developing slow-, ly. To date, the Evanston team hasr not been successful, losing to two schools which also upset the Wol- verines, Indiana and Purdue. Whether or not Michigan will pre- sent the same lineup that was used against the Hoosiers is still undecid- ed. Coach Keen was far from pleased with the work in some of the weights and may give some new men a trial against Northwestern. - Captain Baker and Donahue are fairly certain to wrestle, but the other weights need improvement. In the 135 pound class the competition is especially keen, with Kailes, Maynard and Watson fighting for the call. Kailes has had the edge in the past, but Maynard and Watson have both made great prog- ress and are strong bidders for Kailes' job. The coach feels that the team is about due to break into the win column and is optimistic regard- ing the outcome of the meet. Notre Dame will play U. S. C. at -football next year. two Purdue teams are invading for- eign Ields, in basketball and wrest- ling, three of the Boilermaker squads will remain at home tomorrow, in- cluding the gymnastic and fencing outfits. Coach Lambert's 'ye will meet a formidable obstacle in the Big Ten title race at Madison, Wisconsin, while the wrestling squad, defeated only once this year, will appear in Bloomington with an even chance for a victory over the Crimson. The matinee entertainments in Memorial gymnasium tomorrow will bring the gymnasts, and the fnecers, undefeated yet this year, in a clash with Chicago, which boasts of leading teams in both events, while in the Pur- due pool Northwestern's star paddlers will meet with La Bree's tank men. nasts will stamp Coach Clevett's men as outstanding in Western conference gymnastic circles, as the Boilermak- ers already hold a victory over Wis- consin, a strong aggregation. The track squad is idle this week end, and Coach O'Connor wlil devote his time next week to preparing his entries for the Illinois relays at Cham- paign. Two brothers are making good on Penn State winter sports teams. Capt. Walter Liggett, intercollegiate 135- pound mat champion, is leading the Lion wrestlers, while Wallace Liggett is holding down the 125-pound berth on the same team.
