G.-Dr. Sam- uel Dickloi, president-emeritus ofAl Al ion college, is dead at his home here. Dr.. ikie was the eloquent apostle of prohibtion in the days when the i war on alcohol was being waged against heavy odds. Known in Mich- igan chiefly as president of Albion college, whose destinies he directed for 20 years, Dr. Dickie earned na- tional repute even before his days as a college president as an orator whose faculty for logical, concise and im- pssioned expression was trained on the cohorts of liquor. t, Dr. Dickie was born in Burford township, Oxford county, Ot., June , 1851. 4~For 10 yearly beginning in 1877, Dr. SDickie held the chair of mathematics 7at Albion colege, resigning in Dec. 1887, to become chairman of the pro- hibition national committee. This position he retained for 12 years,dur- ling which time he visited every state, speaking in every city of 20,000 inhabitants or over. His reputation as an orator was Sbrought to its highest point during this period, and he won additional k prominence in later years through 'debates with liquor advocates. His Sdebate with Mayr Rose of Milwaukee 1probably was the best remembered. Iin these affairs he was a hard and uncompromising fighter. In 1901, Dr. Dickie was elected president of Albion college, succeed- mlDr. John P. Ashley. He remainedj head ofthe institution until 1921, when he retired.
