PITTSBURGH, Oct. 13.-Pittsburgh
evened up the count in the world
series here today by 'defeating the
Senators 3-2, Ed Moore's home runl
in the fifth inning giving the Pirates
the one run advantage.
Moore's circuit hit broke all series'
records for total home runs by two
clubs, it being the eleventh home
run thus far <and displacing the mark
bf 10 set up by the Giants and Yan-
kees in 1923.
Goose Goslin scored the first run
of the game in the initial frame when
he hit the ball into the right field!
stands, this being his third four base
hit of the'series, and his sixth in two
years, breaking his own record for
total home runs in championship
games.
The game proved to be a tight
pitching duel between Alex Ferguson,
of the Senators, who tamed the
Pirates in the third game of the
series, and Kremer, Manager Mc-
Kechnie's choice. Both twirlers gave
a splendid exhibition, Ferguson al-
lowing the Pirates seven hits, while
Krbner held the Senators down to
six safe blows. Ferguson gave way
to a pinch hitter in the eighth inning.
The American League represent-
atives counted a second run in the
second inning. Joe Judge, whose hit-
ting hias been a feature of the Sen-
ators' attack thus far, opening the,
stanza with a single. Bluege failed
in his attempt to sacrifice, and Judge
was thrown out at second. Peckin-
paugh then came tlrough with a
slashing double to right field,
Bluege scoring.
The Pirates tied the score in the
third inning, Moore starting off by
working Ferguson for a base on balls.
Peck took Carey's grounder too late
to get Moore, and Carey was also
safe. Cuyler sacrificed, Bluege to
Harris, Moore then scored while
Bluege was throwing out Barnhart at
first, Carey going to third. Traynor
then singled, sending Carey across
the plate. 0
Moore, first man up in the fifth,
scored the deciding run when he hit'
the ball out to the, scoreboard.

PACIFIC COAST PLAYERS
PITTSBURGIH1, Oct. 13.-The Pitts-
burgh Pirates were understood today
to have closed a deal with San Fran-
cisco of the Pacific Coast league for
the purchase of Hal Rhyne, star
shortstop, and Paul Waner, outfield-
er, at a reported price of $100,00'0,
and three players to be delivered
later.
Manager McKechnie admitted the
deal was pending but would not con-
firm it definitely, saying he had not
yet had a final conference with
Barney Dreyfuss, club president.
Rhyne and Waner have been two
of the most eagerly sought minor
league stars this season. At one time
it was reported the New York Yanks
Irad put through negotiations for
them.

around to the idea. If so, the game
will mark the first official intercolleg-

who guided the Louisville Colonels
to the American Association pennant
this year. lie has signed a contract
for two years at a reported salary
of $20,000 a year.
The money is the promise of Wil-
liam Wrigley, Jr., chief owner of the
Cubs.
"I'll shoot a million to put the Cubs

McCarthy will replace George Gib-
son who took the berth last summer
and who will be retained as coach

McCarthy has been mentioned in

since Bill Killifer was relieved of the#

His retention by the Cubs is only
part of a rehabilitation plan, accord-
ing to Wrigley.
"If ability can put us over in 1926

needed this year was hitters. We
led the league in fielding. Well,
we've bought four of the leading hit-
ters of the National, League. No, I
can't announce their names. When
the team makes its appearance next
spring, it will speak for itself."
McCarthy will assume his duties
after his return from the Pacificj
coast where he has taken the Colonels'
for a series with the -San Francisco
club.
He went to Louisville 10 years ago
as a second baseman and took the
reins in 1919, guiding the Colonels
to the flag in 1921 and 1925. He en-
tered baseball in Wilkesbarre, Pa.,
where he was obtained by the Buffalo,
Internationals and he later played
with Brooklyn in the Federal League.

Nine men will leave Ann Arbor to-
morrow night to represent Michigan
in the dual cross country meet
against Wisconsin, which will be run
cuff Saturday morning at Madison. The
race will be run over a three mile
course due to the early date. The
men will start off promptly at 11:00
a. m. so as to be able to witness the
football game in the afternoon.
The squad to represent Michigan
will consist of those men who showed
up well in the trials held last Satur-
day, namely: Captain Callahan,
Reinke, Briggs, lornberger, Jung,
Pfluke, Hill, Baker and Iskenderian.
Coach Farrell and Manager Buick
will accompany the team, to the
Badger stronghold.
The team will leave Ann Arbor to-
morrow night and will arrive at
Madison Friday noon. After their
arrival the harriers will walk over
the course, so as to be familiar With
the layout the following (lay. The
Wolverines will leave Madison Satur-
day night and will return to Ann Ar-
bor Sunday morning.
Saturday's race will be the fourth
held between the two schools. In
Michigan's two previous visits to
Wisconsin she has been the victor.
Last year the tables were turned and
the Badgers gained a victory over the
Maize and Blue course. Coach Far-
rell feels very confident and it looks
very much as if the Michigan distance
men wil make the count three out of
four after Saturday's contest.
