Princeton, N. J., Sept. 27.-That
the character of the Latin instruction
in schools andl colleges throughout
the country falls short in many in-
stances is the copclusion reached by
the Investigating committee of the,
American classicail league, which has
been conducting an inquiry. into the
teachi~g of the Classics for the pa-st
few years. The committee accounts
for the difficulty in the teaching of
the classics by two things. First, a
large part of the 'difficulty is due,
to the way in which the Latin course
is now constituted. Poor teaching al-
so accounts for the situation.
As a remedy the committee sug-
gests that the ;facilities for training
teachers should be improved. It says
that "we do not believe that improve-
ment in the character of the. teach-
ing is attainable here . until really
adlequate :provision is grade for the
training of Latin teachers. It is not
made at the present time."
As a gratifying side to the pres-
ent status of Latin the committee
points to the fac that in the records
of the College Entrance Examination,
board for the period from 1914-23
Latin stood near the head of the list.
It h)ad the highest average record.
among the four subjects 'wich have
'-he largest enrollment.
In general summary of its inquiry
the committee says that "the very
Large enrollment of Latin pupils is
both discouraging *and encouraging.
The recent rapid increase, following
a sagging in Latin and also in Eng-
lish during the Wolrd War, is highly
encouraging.
"It should also be noted that Latin
is' the one most generally studied
foreign language which may be of-
fered for admission to college and
that Latin and French, so closely re-
latedI to each other, when taken to-
gother have four-fifths of the present
total enrollm~ent in all foreign lan-
guages.
"The less encouraging aspect of
this huge Latin enrollment is that
the : spply f teachers, whether adIe-
oquately or inadequately trained, is
very, insufficient and that small pro-
vipion its being made fo$, training
Latin teachers.
