Roy Callahan, '26, of Gibsland, La.,.
was elected captain of the 1926 cross
country team at a meeting of the'
members of this year's team yester-
day, held after sitting for their pic-
ture. Callahan holds the distinction
of being one of the few ever to be
elected to a captaincy of a Michigan(
team after being on the team only
one year.
Serious nose trouble kept him from
staying on the squad in his sopho-
more year, but after an operation hel
reported for track and soon was one[
of Michigan's mainstays on the twol
mile squad. Keeping in training allI
summer he reported in fine shape this
fall. In the very first race of the sea-
son he had the misfortune to have his
first off day of the year finishing sixth,
doing the course in much slower time
than he had in practice. But the next
Saturday he came back and in the1
face of a severe wind broke the M
A. C. course record.
The next Saturday at Ohio State,
in the triangular meet with the Buck-j
eyes and the Illini, he lost his shoel
after the first half mile but managed
to finish ahead of the rest of the
Michigan team in fourth place. Run-
ning over cinders and loose gravel for
four miles and a half, Callahan show-
ed wonderful courage and fight. Un-
able to practice for a week he was
unable to .regain his former condition
in the week that was left before the]
Conference race.
"Ms" were awarded to Clayton
Briggs, '27, and Miles Reinke, '26, at
the meeting. These two men were thel
only ones to receive "Ms" this year,j
the others getting "CMCs." To getl
an "M" it is necessary for the team
to finish either first or second in the
Conference race or for one to finish
first in a Conference race or among{
the first 15 in the Conference run.
