The first article appeared in the second sec- tion of the Daily for Sunday, Octo- her 5th. Leaving' Peru, the Michigan group sailed along the Chilian coast visit- ed Arica, Iquique and Antofagasta, which is the center of the nitrate business. None of these ports have harbors. All depending on the row- boat-basket method of landing. The first real harbor \yas found in Val- paraiso, the second largest port on the Pacific, ranking just after San Francisco. It has all the docks and landing equipment of the modern city. The town itself is very beauti- ful, having a long coast, and many hills. Here again a .commission of stud- ents was on hand to greet them. Camilo Mori, president of the local student federation German de Caso Rivera, student of Law, and Oscar Urquita, editor of LaUnion, the oldest newspaper in South America, were accompanied by other students, some of them Americans. The country around Valparaiso was well covered, the visitors always' being attended by their enthusiastic S o u t h American student-friends.! Vina del Mar, the most exclusive and 'fashionable summer resort on theI Pacific, was visited. A banquet in their honor was given at El Trocade-' ro, a club which a great number at- tended. They were taken on a tour of inspection of the Naval School, the best in Latin America. All the boys were greatly amused by the Chilian fire department. Theya are composed of the very wealthiest' men in Chili-the highest society. To belong is a great social honor. This custom has existed for about 200 years-and the engine houses are all clubs of the most beautifu and expensive character. The city is divided into circles, each circle with its own department, and club.} They drill all afternoon, twice a week, and all the prominent business men leave their work to participate. The clubs are decorated with trophies won, and pictures of those who have died fighting fire. When a fire doe: occur, there is a terrific race to sea which club shall get its engine to the fire first. The men, truck drivers and all ,are .volunteers. ; Amid all these strange,, new con- ditions, which the Americans were' anxious to ubderstand, the Chilians were proudest of their fire engines and insisted on exhibiting them.
