DAY, JANUARY 22, 1924 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Coast Girl, Still In Her Teens, Is Star Of 1923 In Tennis; Lenglen Still Reigns (By Norman I. Brown)--.- Miss Helen Wills, a sturdy miss still- in her teens, stands out as the star of te 1923 tennis season. True, Mlle. Will Entertain at Tea A TNew Pattern~ SAMPLES But above these achievements standst out-the startling play of this California maiden. That she was destined to take her place in the tennis sun was indicated in 1922 when she met Mrs. MollaI Bjurstedt, veteran title holder, in the national tourney. Miss Wills lost toI the Norwegian star, tiring before the masterful driving and back court play of the latter. But her finished play and her courage flashed the news to the world that she was on her way to the top. This last summer she met Mrs. Mal- lory in the finals for the national title and won in two straight sets. Mrs. Mallory was favored by most experts, to win again because of her experience, .strength and terrific style of play. Missy Wills not only defeated her but liter-! ally outclassed her. Before the accur- ate placing and bewildering cross fire of the coast girl Mrs. Mollary went down to quick defeat. Her work stamps her as America's hope next year in the British classic. If she holds the form she displayed last season she should give Mlle. Leng- len real opposition if the French star is still in the game. Illness several bour gymnasium.
