Coach Mather sent the squad" through a stiff workout last night and will hold a light practice tonight just before the team leaves for the game. The same line-up that started against Cincinnati will take the floor tomor- row night. Birks At Tip-off Captain Birks will play the tip-off position. What Birks lacks in height he more than makes up in his ag- gressiveness and the Wolverine lead- er is also a capable shot, having play- ed at forward at the close of last sea- son. George Haggerty and "Bill" Henderson will play the forwards and should prove a constant source of worry to the opposing guards. George is speedy, clever and an ac- curate shot from any position on the floor. Henderson, although not speedy, is an extremely shifty player, especially when close to the basket. His ability to score baskets while closely guarded is an important asset in his play. Harry Kipke and Roy Deng will' play the guard positions, ,with Kip- ke playing the sticking guard. Deng is a newcomer in Varsity competition but has given a splendid acount of himself in the two games played to date. He' hopes to start workouts on' the new floor next week. The basketball team meets its , first real opponent tomorrow night when they journey to South Bend to face Notre Dame. Th1s shou d be a real practice game before the opening of the Big Ten card. Ice is beginning to form at the Coli- seum and it is expected that there will be skating next week which is good news. The hockey squad will swing into atilon tonight according to Coach Joe Barss. When track season reaches full form there will sure be plenty of sports go- ing at the same time. Besides track and hockey there is wrestl- ing, swimming, boxing, skating, and skiing to say nothing of bas- ketball. Lansing, Jan. 3.-Charles J. Farrell has not issued his first official call for Varsity 'track can- didates and will not do so until after the huge track pep meeting which will be held sometime next week the great- er' part of the team is going through daily workouts in Waterman gymnas- ium. The official schedule, which at pres- ent is incomplete will probably be an- nounced at the meeting to all those in- terested in the thin-clad sport. Steve expects more than 200 athletes to ans- wer the first summons. Not a single indoor Conference meet has been scheduled after every school in the Big Ten was tendered an invita- 'tion to match wares with the Wolver- ine performers.. Most -of the schools: with weak teams are afraid the morale I of their team will be disturbed by an early season defeat as has been the case with the Chicago team for the past- few years: Stagg seems to be of the opinion that Michigan has hand- ed his track aggregation a few too many drubbings and is not the least bit modest in saying that is why he will not offer the Wolverines a date this season. Cornell and Michigan are scheduled to match their strength on the boards, or as the case may be in the new Yost field house. The Wolevrines will undoubtedly enter a strong team in the indoor relay carnival to be held at Urbana March 1 and 2. The out- door schedule will probably be. a lot stiffer with dual meets scheduled with Ohio State and Illinois and the Drake I relays, outdoor Conference meet on the card and perhaps the Penn State and Kansas Aggie relays.
