I., is headquarters of the U. S. army in the Orient, and the 15th Infantry is stationed in Tientsin. a transport carrying soldiers to and from Manilla sails monthly, and army officers and their wives are Igranted passage if the ship is not too full. This means that many officers, both of the army and the navy, visit Peking each, month. Mu's. Fette's home in Peking is sit- uated in a locality very accessible to tourists. After she had ordered a rug j for personal use in September, 1920, she saw a design in looms which she liked better, so she offered the first rug for sale, and an army officer's jwife, from Manilla, bought it. Friends of this lady in Manilla admired it, and ever since, whenever the monthly transport arrives in China, there is sure to be many Fette rugs taken back to Manilla. At first, working to that , end, Mu's. Fette was able to have many rugs on display, hut in the last year the demand has been so great that she has heen unable to keep a stock, and often her orders are booked for months ahead- I find that I conveyed a wrong im- pression in an earlier article b~y say- that her output had increased from one rug in 19020 to $135,000 in 1922. She has not made a fortune, far from I it. Of. her profits, which have been a small percentage above cost ' of pro- duction, she has done much good for her rug weavers-anid the rest has all gone into better the rungs and enlarg- ing factories. She. writes.. in. a letter of Nov. 8, 1923: "Z think that my rugs are now J. on the floors of most every one of the foreign _legations in Peking. I have: just received a $4,000:00 order from Viscountess JIellicoe, the wife of Admniral Jellicoe, of the ]ritish fleet," IWhile I was visiting her in 1922, she sold some rugs to the admiral of our United States fleet in the East.
