The Chinese rug makeris especially
clever in fixing up any error in his
rugs. If he has not dyed enough'
wool for certain rugs and the new lot
is a trifle lighter-he says "Mas-ke"
"Never mind"-and taking some dye
he carefully "paints" the finished rug
so the colors match.
This painted portion, not having the
dye boiled in and set, as is the rest 3
of the rug, sooner or later fades, and
the whole rug is bad looking. It some-
times takes months of wear before
this "paint" is worn off, but a rug
expert can detect it at once. If the
nap is parted and the color is shown
to go clear through, one can be sure
it is not a painted rug. Also, if the
colors are uniform on the under side.
If he has been careless in thread-
ing his loom, he cheerfully weavesl
I in another warp thread so skillfully
that only an expert would detect it.
To be sure, a joose warp soon means
loose nap but,. by, that time, the rug
is-on some floor'in America.' If there
is an error in tlie filling, knotting or
pattern that piece of tde rug is care-
fully cut out,, anl refilled. This can
not be pounded, down firmly, but.it can
be made topas all bnt the keenest!
