THE STORY- OF THEIR' MANIJ.
FACTURE
Continued
Many Oriental rugs, can not be
cleaned with a vacuum cleaner because
Its suction tends to loosen the knots
and_ pull out the nap. A well madeI
Chinese rug is not harmed by the con-
stant us~ of the. most powerful vacuumI
suction.
Thus .they work steadily rom day-
light until dark and in some factor-
ies by artificial light way into the
night. In most factories the boys aref
bound out to the rug makers for a
term of years. It is virtually slavery
for they 'receive only their food, often
very .poor and insufficient, and cloth-}.
ing, many times just cotton rags which
do not protect from' the sevepe nor-I
themn winters.
Six or seven boys working steadilyI
may make four or five inches of a rug
nine feet wide in a day. After the,
rug is finished ,it is placed on thehl
floor and trimmed smooth with a bigI
shears then witli this same clumsy
instrument the threads are carved'.
away from all around the design, even
to the finest lines. It is marvelous,
the skill and rapidity with which this
is done.
(Story to be conainukd tomorrow)
