Chicago, Nov. 17.-Hundreds of
Michigan and Wiscons'n university
alumni gathered on one of the floors
of the Monadnock block to get the
play-by-play returns of the battle at.
Madison this afternoon. A number of;
rousing cheers were given both teams
and a general spirit of enthusiasm
presided.
Five special trains took Chicago.

Masques' eighth annual play, "A
Thousand Years Ago" to be presented
Tuesday evening in Hill auditorium
under the direction of Prof. J. Raleigl
Nelson of the Eng sh department -ih
a re-resentation of the work of Per-
cy Mackaye.t
The play is an experiment in an
old' dramatic form, the improvised
Italian. comedy which was popular in
Italy for at least four centuries. Gi-
ozzi and other masters of the Come-
dia dell' Arte have used this plot bas-
ed on the Persian tale of a princess
in a far eastern place who fell in
love with a beggar, but Mackaye has
injected into this foundation, the fea-
ture of a band of vagabond Italian
maskers. Arriving at the gate of an
eastern city and scenting adventure in
the severed heads hanging on the
gates, the maskers enter the city and
within an hour, Capacomico, their
leader, has put himself on the throne.
The stock characters of the Italian
comedy, Harlequin, Punchinello,
Scaramouche, and Pantaloon are giv-
en a new andhuman treatment in
Yacka ye's hands. Capacomico, the
master director, recalls the versatile,
quick-witted Montebank who in the
centuries of improvised comedy in It-
aly combined his stock characters in
an endless variety of plots.
Elizabeth Pike, who acted the part
of the eccentric old Chinese general
on the in aginary horse in the "Yellow
Jacket",as the old Merrythought, nas
displayed special aptitude for this ex-
acting role in "A Thousand Years
Ago".
The problem of transforming Hill
auditorium stage into an oriental
alace set in a Persian garden will
be accomplished by the set designed
by Professor Nelson and executed by
Cornell and Davis, of the New Detroit
Opera house.
Musical atmosphere will be supplied
by an orchestra ,under the direction of
Mrs. J. L. Schneider.
The Persian Garden of Liza Lehman
and the Sheherazade music of Rim-
rky-Korsakoff, written for the. Rus-
sian ballet are among the sourlces!
from which Professor Nelson has tak-
en his music.
The sale of tickets will continue
from 9 to i o'clock and ,from 1 to 5
o'clock tomorrow and Tuesday in the
4 11111 auditorium box office.

ogy department will speak on "Earth-
quakes" tomorrow night at Oak Park,
Ill., where he will go following the
football game yesterday at Madison.
