It oc- curred on the occasion of a resolution directing General Washington to ac- quire two armed vessels and.use them to capture two British brigs loaded with mur itions that had sailed unes- corted froi England. In this resolu- tion Washington was also instructed to give orders for the "proper encour- agement" of the "marines and sea-' men" serving on those vessels. Today the marines observe the 148th, anniversary of their natal day, which was Nov. 10, 1775, when the Congress by resolution directed that a regiment of 'two battalions of marines be raised.
