S. W., Nov. 3-Austral- Ian cattlemen are deeply concerned over the reports that a pest known as the buffalo fly has been ravaging many herds. The pest is similar to a fly which causes extensive losses among herds in India, Africa, and the East Indies, andi it is asserted that the damage will exceed that caused by the dreaded tick in Queensland and1 Northerl New South Wales unless prompt action is taken to check it. Sir xGeorge Knibbs, director of the Institute of Science and Industry, has made a cursory insuiry into the mat- ter. IHe stated that they pest is be- coming serious in the northern terri- tor'y and will spread to other parts of Australia unless preventive measures are taken immediately. He added thatj it might bscome more serious than the :5 tick which has already reached New South Wales, Western Australia and Queensland from the northern terri- tory. The result would be an eco- nomic loss that would run into mil- lions of pounds sterling, and years t would be requirgd to eradicate the flies. Reports from Kimbersley, Western Australia, said that a large and repre- r entative gatheilng of pastoralists de- t' ided that the pest is menacing the cattle industry more than the tick. De- ste he exceptionally good season, theiresults of the operations atathe Wvyndhain meat works have been most disappointing because of the pest. It vas decided to urge the federal minis- try to appoint a specialist to direct the eradication of the flies. ARCHITECTS' INSTITUTE M EDl WONBY GRADUATE Ralph R.
