I Edmwd James .Monroej
lHe's a bachelor. That's Edward
James Monroe's explanation of why
he is hale and hearty at 108. H-e will
be 109 on July 4.
Major Monroe-he fought for the
United State,:, in tlre Mexican and
Civil wars, an~d for France in the
Franco-Prussian war of 1870--is the
youngest son of the fifth president
of the United States. His .father pro-
rnulgated the Monroe Doctrine.
In a picturesque retreat he lives thre
life of a recluse.* He does his own
cooking and washing, and' raises mosts
of his food on a small truck farm.'

! President Marion L. Burton Is1
confined to his home as a result of an'
indisposition brought on by overwork,
it was announced yesterday.
The President's condition is not con-
sidered serious, but he h~as been ad-
vised by his physician to rest for a
few days. It is expected that he will
return to his office early next week.
DRAMA
(Continued from Page Four)
sheets, is really of tragic significance.
Madame, Duse, exhausted after years
of the most amazingly brilliant sea-
sons In continental Europe, and. her
love apparently blasted by the infam-
ous poet of Fiume, looked forward to
some score years of seclusion in -a
crumbling Italian villa. Unfortunately
the war appeared and literally swept
away {everything. but the bare clothes
on her; back. It such~ a plight there
was only one recourse to regain her
dream of seclusion: a tour of the land
jof the Dollars.
There is little more to say-the
irony is only too obvious. .

more than one fire to put us out of business. Part of the church organ
can still be used. And the motion picture machines were not injured at
