ONGWRE8S LIBRARY SYSTEM
USED FOR BIG COLLECTIONS
One of the mtost important changes
be inaugurated in many years by
e University library is the recent
handonmnent of 4the v.:.old rvdecial sys-
tem, of classification in favor of the
thelL bary of Cogress. Tie .rap,-
glim tf~th lrary cub rin; the
st 15yars andi~he fact that a-
roxinmately 0,000 volumes fae: ien
nually added to the present collc .
on necessitated the oCi~t nit f°a
stem that could, be readily used for
large numbr' of llioks. '
The Library of Conrss sytem
as chosen to fill this need bcaus,
has already been found peculiarly
itedl to a university library and la
cen followed with gre t success by
braies at John Hopkis, Calfrnia.
and ,Chicago.
Ilae Used Old Systemt
The decimal classification which the1
library has used since .1897 was devis-
ed by Melville Dewey, librarian at Am-
lherst college. It was built utp on the
old Baonian theory -of knowledge and'
did not al'ways adapt itself t the pra-1
tical arrangement of books. 'There
*ere 10 main classes in the decimal1
''stern which coud-' hedivided and'
aulhdivided until about 10,000 numbers
* -re reached and it was cWffcult to
exp~land the divisions to fit a library of
oveor 15,000 volumes.
j 'The Library of Congress classifca-
ltpn has 21 main classes andan be
ivided and subdivided i no oth hole
4.nd fractional arts util more thr n
1 0,000 numbers are reached. Since
le Library of Congress i the depos-
toy library for all copyright nuter-,
fal in the nted States and minte it
anhiually receives tlousnds of ' Vol'
Mies in exchange fromt European
countries, its system of classiication
inecessarily always kept tif to bate.
100Vol ume IRechssifed
.The library has already recassified
i bout 10,000 volumes since the adop-
Von of the new system on October 1,
but the fact tat'the library now pos-
,esses more than 625,00 ooks will
mean that thie classification will take
from 10 to 15 years to be comlple~ey
0ntalled.
