Munns, of Denver. Colo., has' tossed the shot in the neighbor- hood of 45 feet in practice al- ready this season. Both men will take part in the Olympic tryouts this spring. TEN TRAC KMEN TO 'ATTEND M:E E T Dashmen, Hurdlers, Jumpers, and. lay Team Will Make Trip Tomorrow Re I DIAMOND TRYOUTS ARE STILL ENGAGED IN BATTING DRILL With the change of weather, the minds of Coach Ray Fisher and his baeeball squad are turning toward the thought of the outdoor diamond, which may be in use within two or three weeks if the thermometer continues to climb at its present rate. Although the Ferry Field ball grounds are still in bad shape from the constant thaw, there is a possibil- ity that they will dry up sufficiently to allow the diamond squad to move outdoors in time to get in considerable work before the trip south which will start April 11. The Varsity play- grounds are one great mass of mud at present, but as soon as the trick- ling rivulets caused by the melting of the snow stop running, it will be possible to start getting it into shape. Batting practice is still holding the stage at the field house and will con- tinue to do so until the basketball floor is removed and a diamond laid out on the site now occupied by the court.'. Although a large share of the candidates are rapidly getting their eye on the ball. no sluggers of unusu- al ability have been uncovered. This is a disappointment to Fisher who needs a number of hardhitting lads to fill the shoes left vacant by the graduation of several of last year's luminaries in the realm of swat. Furthermore, the pitchers are not displaying any remarkable propen- sities in the deceiving line, which cir- cumstance, coupled with the compar- ative inability of the fielders to con- nect with the ball, 'makes Fisher's taske liardone. How ve, prospdets ;are not as glooiny assmight' be the case. Captain Jack Blott still swings "his dynamic bat with all the vehe- inence of' last year, and: Hary Kipke, vho has the happy faculty of con- ,ecting when a hit is most needed, 'will r rt 'as soon as h si kee is 7ufficxitr y healed. George Dagger- 3.y will be out after his old place on ythe infield after the basketball winds up. its season at Urbana Saturday ; ight. Haggerty will probably be us- "d at third base this spring, a pos-' ~tin r he ayed' in sveal ,of eg e ear 'ako LI:is a fast mnan around the bag, and should covei- 9he hot corner in good shape. DilIman is making a bid for the short stop position, and may prove to be a capable successor of "Gabby"' 'z s a cpIl' si ss r.o " a b"teritz who captained last year's team. Gies and DeView are among the new men who are trying for the short stop and second base positions. "Dutch" Wilson appears to have the call at the initial sack. Wilson came up from the freshman squad of last season. and has the makings of an able first baseman. He handles him- self well, but is rather weak with the stick. If his hitting improves, he should be of great help to Michigan in the coming campaign. The catching department is well taken care of by Captain Jack Blott, who has few peers as a receiver in the 'West. The Wolverine pilot's mighty bat will play an important part in Michigan's drive for .Confer- ence honors for another year. Baker and McBride, are also workig out at the position behind the bat. The more experienced pitchers are -showing good form in the daily work- outs although none of them is a sen- sation by 'any means. Benson, Stry- ker, Shoesmith, and Torrey have all had work on other Varsity squads,' and are getting into shape rapidly. Gillingham, Hildebrand, Parks, Shaw, and a large number of others are al- so working for places on the hurling corps.
