THE MICHIGAN DAILY THURSDAY, M:1ItCII 6, 1',' THE MICHIGAN DAILY THURSDAY, MARCH 6,1 MAY ORDER METERS F R C T Ornance R g ulting and Licensing Cats Reaches Second Reading EX1PEC~T RATE INCREASE FOR, THOSE RIDING LONG~ DISTANCE Approval by the~ city common coun- cil of a proposed ordinan~ce to license and regulaite taxicab own~ers an~ddriv- rs, and which also m~akes provision for the installation of taxinneters to determine the rate of fare as signi- fied at Monday night's session of the council, when the ordinance was giv- en its second reading, is causing much speculation among students and townspeople relative to the advisabil- 'ity of the passage of such a measure without first enlightening riders of the terms of the ordinance and the new prices which it is expected wvill prevail if the measure is passed at its final reading. The ordinance regulating and di-1 censing taxicabs is the result of al joint meeting of the ordinance corn- .nittee and representatives from the l various companies held recently. If passed, the measure will provide that all taxicabs must be. licensed by \the city for the sum of $50 for any number up to five taxicabs and~ $10 .each for more than that number. Stipulations relative to licene 4fees of drivers, cab stands, e'tc., are made but 'no mention of what new rates may possibly be are referred to, a fact which persons conversant with" the affair haive hithe;rto considered; indicative of the fact that an. increase in rates may be expected.
