"People in this age are incorrigibly
idealistic and incorribly prone to find
fault with their own age," declared
Dean Shailer Mathews, of the Divinity
School of the University of Chicago, in
a sermon given last Sunday morning
at the Baptist church. "It seems to be
the custom for this generation, as it
has been the custom for every gener-
ation in the past, to condemn the suc-
ceeding one," he said.
"People are always looking hack
and wishing for the 'old times' al-
though people in the 'old times' were
in turn looking back and wishing for
tba times preceeding them. Peple
call this ancestmrlwp slip and are said
to worship their ancestors, but they do
not; they simply worship the habits
the ancestors are thought to have
had."
Not Rational
The dean continued, "We modern
men and women are not rational. We
are superstitious. The custom of
'touching wood' is still prevalent
among many of us. We are ordinary
and we are satisfied with the ordinary,
with the same things happening over
and over again. We encase ourselves
with superficial knowledge and are
complacent with our 'vocabulary'
which we use without thinking.
But there comes a time when we are
not satisfied with the ordinary. We
get into trouble and we pray God to do
something exceptional. And it both-
ers us because he doesn't."

Dean Mathews urged that "we should
not hunt God in the exceptional but
in the ordinary part of life. For if
we can only find Him in the miracul-
ous, using the term 'miraculous' in
the common sense, we shall never find 
Him, because miracles in the old bib-
ical sense do not &ccur any more. Sci-
