On my way to Warsaw, I met an
engineering student foni the Univer-

and me to his rooms, Lodi, what
rooms; andl the university's dorni-
tory at that! Hleatless, carpetless,
beds without sheets, tables withont
any kind of cover, almost lpicttreles,
- was the sort of room that we were
led into. The scanty amounts of food j
handed out to the students was chck-j
ed most carefully to make sure ibati't
"re's" were not obtained. This wais
done by proper and careful punching'
of meal tickets, which precluded any-
one's getting more than 'his share.
The long tables at "which these stt

of plank hoards; their chairs nothing
more than wooden benches. Yet mtany
of these earnest fellows spent as miany

At the U~niersity of Berlin, and al
the 'University of Posen, we met stu-
dents who were too prou1 to, in any
way mention their sufferings, their
necessity of help. 'These were mneit-
ably brought out in indirect ways
which were equally convincing: their,
ahiny, unpressed clothes, hand wash-'

ties; their worn and torn shirts and,
