Kustendil, Bulgaria, Jan. 22. - The
dissatisfaction of Macedonian refu-
gees in southern Bulgaria with the
treatment accorded them, and the
growing class conflict bctween the
peasants and bourgeois of the coun-t
try, have caused two uprisings in Bul-i
garia in two months.
The Macedonians, who revolted first
at Nevroscope. near the Greek fron-
tier, drove a number of the govern-
ment officials out of the town. Short-
ly after they handed the town backt
to the authorities with the explana-
tion that their movement was sim- f
ply a warning that the government!
should send better functionaries to
that region, and abandon its policy of

garded by the government as sympa-
thizing with the bourgeois class, and
as hostile to the party in power.
Later there was a similar manifesta-
tion here at Kustendil. After hav-
ing arrested some of their adversar-
ies the insurgents, in this instance,
sent several men of the town to So-
fia to demand retraction by Premier
Stambouliski of certain declarations
made recently at Belgrade, to which
the Macedonians take exception. Al-I
so they ask that beter officials bea
sent by the government to this re-
gion, and they demand indemnities
for the lives of Macedonians who?
they claim were killed by government
agents. The insurgents here gave
way to the military after , making
their demands known, and retired
from the town.

FEMINISTS GAIN
JUDICIAL VICTORY
Montreal, Que., Jan. 22--(By A.P.)
--Feminists of the Province of Que-
bee hail as a victory for their cause
the appointment of two women as
commissioners of the superior court
for the judicial districts of Montreal.
The ruling is described as the first
step toward admitting women to the
bar of the Province, for which a bat-
tle has been waged for many years
in the legislature.
The first women to be named comn-
missioner yareGertrude Sheridan and
Gertrude Doyle, public ;stenographers.
The powers conferred by their ap-
pointment include the right to receive
within the judicial district of Montreal
affidavits which may be used in any
court in any' district of the province. E
Affidavits thus received have thensame
force as if they had been receied in!
coulrt.
The women's petition for commis-
sionerships was rejected by Mr. Jus-
tice Campbell Lane when first pre-
sented to superior court here. The
judge took the ground that there was,
no precedent for appointing women,
and lie declined to create one. A fewj
days. later the petition was presented
again, this time to Mr. Justice MacLen-
nan, who granted it at once.
Every session of the provincial leg--
islature for many years has seen the
introduction of a bill to extend to
womenthe right to engage in the
practice of law in the province. -The
measure has always been defeated by
large majorities. 'Women in Quebec
enjoy the franchise in Canadian feder-
al affairs, but may not vote in pro-
vincial elections.
