IProf. A. E. White, of the Chemical
IEngineering department, will talk onj
' 'Waterproofing Concrete", at 4:15 o'-
clock this afternoon, in room 303 of
the Chemistry building.
The lecture will deal with experi- j
F meats which have been carriedi on by
the Chemical Engineering department
frseveral years in an attempt to dis-
cover a means of mixing concrete so
as to make it waterproof and more
durable when exposed to extreme
amounts of moisture. Prof esso;
jWhite, who has been leading in this
work for many years; advocates the'
mixing of insolubile soaps with the
concrete so as to destroy capillary
action and prevent water from corn-
ing through the concrete. Asphalt and
petrolium oil have also been used for'
'this purpose. While the value of
these mixtures is disputed Professor
White has proven their superiority#
over lime and clay which were prev-
iously used.
This same paper was read before
the national convention of the Amer-
ican Institution Hof Chemical Engin-
eers at Richmond, Va., on Dec. 8.
