4coach E. J. Mather, Varsity basket-
ball meitor, yesterday announced the
names of the men that will continue
Varsity basketall practice during the
holdays. Ile plans to havTiiy, Birks,

The, first blow of the season fell
yesterday wihen it was made known
Ithat Keefer had been placed on warn-

Mather had expected' to use Keef-

games, andl this unforseen happening

' IN SEASON
The outlook for a strong all-fresh
basketball team this year is very en-
couraging i the early workouts are
any criterion. Although "Coach Fish-
er (il not start work with his year-
ling squad until two weeks later than
last fall the ball tossers are now
rounding into excellent shape.
A squad of more than 100 aspir-
ants greeted the coach at the first
few 'sessions but the pruning kife
has elininated nmore, than half of this
number. The sound~ is now compos-
ed of as fine a bunch of fast, rangy
players as have ever battled for nn-
orals at Waterilan gymo. Although
11 any of the playrs have had consid-
e rable experience in -intersholastle
Combats" the fundamentals are being
heavily stressed by Coach Fisher so
t hat the future Varsity men will be
ti oroughly grounded in the type of
basketball in vogue at Michigan.
The squadl of 45men has been di-
vided: into'"two sections, one bunch
.working out on Mnay and Wednes-
day evenings while the' other crew
uses the flor on Tuesday and Thurs-
dlay nights. Boti divisions are
brought together on Friday evenings
anid a lively scrimmage is usually on
the parogramime. On the other nightsa
the men are drilled in pivoting, pass-
ing, and guarding. ;Arching of shots .
and covering of the ball also come in I
for a great deal of °attention. Team
work' is also being emphasized be-
caue. while :there are a number of
brilliant .individual performers to be
seen on th court -a sense of o-opera-
ti'Pn seems to- be entirely lacking at
times.
The real hard workouts will be in
order as soon as the vacatinon is over
and practice games :with the Varsity
and Varsity seconds will hold the at-
tent(ion of;~,;the" yearlings.' While it
is not. expected that the freshmen
will be an.iygreat obstacle in the pth
of the big team these big boys ogt
to make the session interesting.

The winner servedl a 16iw wickedI

this was offset'- considerably by the
