a capella, was most difficult of per-
formance, and that of Franck, the
most melodically beautiful and most
intelligible.
"LesbPreludes", one of Liszt's
twelve symphonic poems, arranged
for two pianos and played by Martha
Merkle and Grace Richards of the
School. of Musical faculty, was not
able for technique and tone, though
lacking in clinmax, and 'devoid"7 of ,the
color that its customary orchestral
performance supplies.'As a- duet, it
was irreproachably played.,-
Nora Crane Hunt, also of the School
of Music faculty; sang a group of
four songs, of which - Strauss' "Ich
trage Meine" was most beautifully
done and best suited to her voice.
Mendelssohn's Overture from Mid-,
summer Night's Dream, arranged for
four pianos, concluded the program.

ON ALFONSO'S ART
"The Art . of King Alfonso, the
Learned" was the -topic of. the Uni-
versity lecture given Tuesday night
by Prof.;Antonio G. Solalinde, of Mad-
rid; who is acting as temporary pro-
?essor of' Spanish literature at the
University during the present school
year.
Speaking before a large group of
students and instructors, Professor
Solalinde outlined the artistic produc-
tions of this strange king, both in the
field of music and literature, and the
I effect of his work on modern Span-
I ish literature.
The lecture was illustrated by lan-
tern slides and by. examples of some
of Alphonso's songs, the latter being
rendered by violin and piano.
