That Notre Dome will have a grid-
iron machine as representative as
those that have made her a leader in.
Midwest football during the past 20
years, is the opinion of those critics'
who have viewed the team in its ear-
lier stages. While the, team is lighter
than the elevens which for the last
two years went through tough sched-
ules undefeated, Coach Rockne seems
to, be well pleased with the material
and the response- that he and Walter
Halas and Roger Kiley, his assistants,
are getting from the promising squad.
Although the team will not be com-
posed of veterans, Gus Desch, the
hurdler, Paul Castner, one of the best
kickers in the country, Frank Thom-
as, playing' his third year and Joe
Bergmnann will present. a backfield
that will cause no end of trouble to
the Army, Georgia Tech. and Nebras-
ka.
Capt. Glenn Carberry, and Tim Mur-
p~hy will hold down the wings, Tom
Lieb, conference champion discus
thrower, and Forrest Cotton appear
to have the call on the tackle posi-
tions. Ed. Degree, Ifarry B~rown, Neil
Flynn, and Eugene Oberst are battl-#
ing for the guard berths- Bob Reagan,
a little 158 pounder, is leading the
race for the pivot job, his accurate
passing being finely adapted to the
famous shift. The shift is going

The Army is out for revenge.
*And judging from the early showing
of the West Point squad- the soldier
boys may. turn, the tables on the wor-
thy opponents 'who trod them under-
foot, footballically Speaking, last fall.
The 13 to 0 defeat the West Point
team' handed the strong University of
K~ansas eleven, while not being em-
phatic in itself, showed that the army

team has the making of a good elev-
en, experts 'agree. The team's out-
look was brilliant before practice
started. Aver a dozen veterans re-
~turned to the campus. Captain Breid-
ster, guard and one of the line stars
of last year's eleven, reported full of
pep, along with the other vets.
The Kansas game showed that the
team already has a powerful attack.

vere defeats. Yale licked the soldier
lads 14,to 7 earlier in the season and
Notre Dame-later wrecked by the
professionalism scandal-beat West
Pointers 28 to 20. This year the Ar-
my squad tackles Yale Oct. 28 and
Notre Damte Nov. 11 and hopes to
write a different ending to the story
of those two games.

Coach Matjher's basketball squad
ha~s commenced- the fall training, with
more than 50 men in basketball togs.
With five letter *men back this year
and an- abundance of. good m aterial
from the squad last year, together
with men from h the, freshman team,
Mather has every chance of forming a
winning tea'm.,
At the present time Mather is drill-
ing his men, in the fundamentals of
the game. The guards, forwards, and
centers are practicing in separate
squads, two nights every week.
Of course the .,ootball men will not
he ou~t for some time, and as miost, of
the best material for the team is drawn
from this channel, the fuill strength
of Coach Mather's squad, is not on the
floor.
Inelgiblity has not as yet hamper-
ed Mather, and the five letter men
from last year's team will be on hand
as soon as they are free to do so.1
