IN '1$A9PV !1 ART' SOMw E! SEVEN OF A cycle of seven song recitals by Mine Clara Clemens has been arrang- ed by Matinee Musicale. The first concert will be given a week from Thurda y vening and will be followed by concerts on the six following Mon- day evenings until the cycle is com- pleted. As the daughter of Mark Twain and the wife of Ossip Gabrilow- itsch, Mine. Clemens has naturally commanded attention, but her promin- ence in contemporary music rests solely upon the solid fouldation of a fine contralto voice and a discerning musical artistry. Lovers of song in its finer sense. those who are appreciative of the more intangible qualities of musical excel- lence, as well as the music-loving pub- lic will find in Mine. Clemens' singing a source of deep satisfaction, for her broad musical education and great powers of interpretation exhibit herC beautiful voice to rare advantage. En-; gagement of Mme. Clemens is there- fore regarded as one of the outstand- ing accomplishments of the current season. Y So far as can be learned, no singer has ever before attempted to show the development of the art-song from its beginning as the naive .combination of tune and rhyme as sung in the cot- tages of peasants to the emotionally elaborate and intricately wrought lied. chanson and ballade of today. Mme. Clemens' seven programs. represent a1 vast amount of selective work. Hun- dreds of songs had to be head and studied and memorized-a task requir- ing months of severe concentration. That her, efforts have been well spent is indicated by the reception accord- ed her last May in Munich where she sang, the cycle and last September in other large European cities where critics were unanimous in pronounc- ing her musical gifts to be of a high order. The cycle has also been giver, successfully in New York and Detroit during the present season.. Mme. Clemens will sing in Pattengill auditorium. Tickets for the entire series of concerts are $2 and are now on sale at Wahr's, Graham's, and Slat- er's book stores. Single admissions will be 75 cents. . At the first concert there will be distributed handsomely bouind booklets containing the words of all the songs in the cycle repertory LIEAGUE WILL ENTERTAIN LEGISLATORS ANi WIVES Extensive plans are being made by the Women's League for the entertain- m*ont of the state legislators, who will ari'e in Ann Arbor Thursday.
