Jordan, former dF~ean of women, who has been abroad since .June, has included in her letters to various friends here accounts of many interesting excavations and ruins which she and Mr. Jordan have seen in their expeditions near Rome. According to Mrs. Jordan, the find whichi archeologists consider the most implortant excavation found in Rome within five years is that made about a year ago under the San Sebastian church. This discovery Mrs. Jordan describes as a villa of ten rooms which was found in a perfect state of preser- vation forty feet below the surface of the ground. "The villa with its mosaic floor has ceilings and seats and pillars of mar- ble and its walls are covered with beautiful frescoes as fresh as if they had been made yesterday", writes Mrs. Jordan. Judging from the symbols on the walls the villa was obviously the property of Christians. Mrs. Jor- dan, however, describes the head of a Mledusa in the middle of the celling of the largest room. This strange inix ture of paganism and Christianity w"ao explained to the1 Jordanls by a priest who wvas convinced that this w aoa method of "playing safe" which the people of these early- times employ- ed.
