Immel of the Department of Public Speak- ing, author of a new book, "The De- livery of a Speech" which will be ready for use by the department in about a week, in an interview Sun- day said, "I will certainly be at war with the Universities of Illinois and Wisconsin as soon as the book is on the market. They are both diamet- rically opposed to the "practical" in elecution. They teach entirely by theory while my method is a little theory and a lot of practice. Too much theory isn't good for beginners." One of the chief points of interest in the book is , the page on "Sugges- tions for Memorizing." According to the author these suggestions are re-' sults of ten years of practical experi- ment and observation in his public speaking classes, combined with the psychological theory of memory. The eight memorized speches in the course were selected in view of their hold on student interest, relegating speeches by Demosthenes; Aristotle, and Woodrow Wilson to other depart- ments. Humor as in "The Rise and Fall of the Mustache," is one of the keynotes to the choice of speeches. Alternating with the speeches are sug- gestions for extemporaneous talks. This volume, though extremely in- complete in its mimeograph form used last year, has been found so practical that calls have been made for it for class instruction at Mom- mouth college, Illinois, Grand Rapids Junior college, Muskingum college, Ohio, and for several Minnesota col- leges. It will be used for all begih- ning classes in public speaking at the University. Law text books, new and second hand, at Wahr's, 316 State St.-Adv. "The Affairs of Anatol," the multi- starred DeMille feature which has packed the Majestic beginning with its first showing Sunday, has much more to recommend it than the mere galaxy of motion picture headliners which the producer assembled in pro- ducing it. Truly the introduction of such screen celebrities as Wallie Reid, Bebe Daniels, Gloria Swanson, Theodore Roberts and others of eqlual fame into a single photo-play is recommendation enough but "The At- fairs of Anatol" adds to this the typical DeMille sumptuousness of production, together with a type of acting which the screen too seldom sees.' Wallie Reid's Anatol is convincing, as are likewise Bebe Daniels' pre- sentation of Satan Synne, and Gloria's depiction of Anatol's loving but little understanding wife. In short the picture is one well worth seeing- STATE DE More than 160 Michigan school will take part this year in the inter high school debating contest hel under the auspices of the Universit Extension Bureau.
