R. HAMILTON 4 Former Advertising Manager of Wanamaker's, Philadelphia Down around Monterey bay, the sea anemones are almost as ck as the scientists who come td study them. Now, for the .efit of those who have not spent four years in a laboratory ting little animals into thin slices to study under a micro- pe,'let it be said here that a sea anemone is a cross between eautiful plant and a hungry animal and was created for the e purpose of baffling young scientists and entertaining older It is about as big as your fist. It lives under water attached i rock. It lies innocently open like a great chrysanthemum- only presenting its stomach, instead of its heart, to the world, the inside of its stomach at that. When any animal touches it closes up around that animal and immediately digests them. Recently two scientists were watching a young crab, wander-' .aimlessly about above a little garden of sea anemones. Like crabs and many people, he was walking backward and think- of something else, when he happened to step on the petals of s innocent flower. Instantly this innocent flower grabbed n and began closing its doors. Crabby put up a valiant fight- hit out with every leg-he performed surgical marvels with scissor claws, but it was of no use. The anemone closed over n and began covering him with a slimy digestive fluid, which ises as a sauce on all its food. When science, which for once had found a heart, finally eased the little crab, he crawled weakly up on the rocks and{ re fervent thanks, like Jonah, for his deliverance.. The point to be illustrated is that in all towns there are res like the sea anemone, which are merely fastened to the eet. It is hard to tell just why and what they are. They do t advertise-they do not stand for anything. They are com- sed principally of a hungry stomach and you do not know ether they are fish, fowl or good red herring. From the out- e they look as beautiful as a flower. 'W hen you get inside they se up on you like a rapacious animal, and when you get out ain-if you ever do get out-you are inclined like Jonah and crab to give thanks for your deliverance. There is only one thing to do in business and that is to go to stores you know-to the stores that place themselves on record advertising what they are. The stores that do not advertise are like flowers in the' sea; ey may be very beautiful and perfectly all right, and then again y may turn out to be merely a bunch of hungry tentacles that 11 close up on you, cover you with a slimy praise, and then pro- ,d to digest you. clear down to the lining of your pocketbook.'
