Patterson, of the depart- ment of engineering mechanics, in a discussion of "Relativity," before the Ann Arbor section of the American Association of Enginers Tuesday night at the Union. Professor Patterson traced the his- tory of the attitude of science toward ether, the hypothetical medium through which certain waves, such as those of light, are supposed to travel. 1I1chelson's Theory Prof. A. A. Michelson, now of the University of Chicago, and Prof. F W. Morley, of Western Reserve Uni versity, made experiments in Cleve- land in 1886 which led to the opin- ions that this ether, heretofore con- sidered unaffected by motions of bodies through it, was actually drag- ged about by the motion of the earth. Einstein's theory, formulated not long after this time, apparently explained this result most satisfactorily b' e'liminating the need for ether alto- gether. Einstein predicted an apparent shift, due to the sun's gravitational effect upon light, in the position of certain stars in the region of the sky near the sun during a total eclipse in 1918. This prediction was closely borne out by observation. It was after this time, Professor Pattersor stated, that the public in general woke up to the revolutionary effect -f Einstein's theory. Now it is by no means impossible n the opinion of astronomers, Pro- fessor Patterson pointed ot, that ti" "unarent shift observed during the eclipse under discussion may have an explanation entirely different from that offered by Einstein; it might be explained even by such a simple phe- nomenon as refraction. .Prof.Dayton C. Miller, of the Case School of Anied Science, who is continuing Mchelon and Morlev's Ceveland work at Mount Wilson. Cali- fornia, has just Announced' results that tend to indicate that in the C1- fornia laboratory, situated on a moun- tain top, about which there are lpss obstructions than in the city of Cleve- land, only a fraction of the ether fo'- lows the earth's movements. This would tend in Professor Patterson's opinion to substant'ate the old ether hypothesis and refute Einstein. Based on Speed of Light "The faundations of the theory of relativity," said Professor Patterson, "are the assumpftions that the speed of light is the maximum limit of mo- tion, and that objects are foreshort- ened in the direction toward which they are moving, the foreshortening being proportional to the objects' velocities, as first suggested by Fitz- Gerald. Some of Einstein's deduc- tions are that simultaneously in time is relative, not absolute; that par- allel lines may meet, due to the fourth dimension which is imaginary time; and that mass is not constant, but , changed like dimensions, in pro- portion to velocity. "I am not ready to give up my old ideas of Euclidian geometry, of the conservation of mass, and of time," 'oncluded Professor Patterson. "I'm frankly skeptical." Something for sale? Ancient Greek's JMathematics Is Now Translated Work on the translation of "The Arithmetic of Nicomachus of Gerasa," started and carried almost to com- pletion by Martin L. D'Ooge, formerly of the Greek department of the Uni- versity, is practically complete, ac- cording to Dr. Frank E. Robbins, as- sistant to the president and formerly of the Greek department, who has! been devoting a portion of his time to the work. When Professor D'Ooge retired he undertook to translate the work of Nicomachus, probably the most valu- able of books in the development of mathematics, from the Greek to Eng- lish, a task that had never been ac- -omp'ished. Upon his death in 1915 the work was not quite complete and 'acked po'ishing. Since that time Prof. F. W. Kelsey. ,%f the Latin department, Prof. Louis C. Karpinski. of the Enzineerinq col- 'age. and DeWitt H.
