THREE VICTORIES AND TWO
DEFEATS IN EARLY GAMES
With the preparatory period atC
' Ohio State now a matter of history
and the acid test in the form of West-
ern 'Conference competition close at
hand, Ohio State's basketball team is
quickening its pace in daily practice
under the direction of Coach George
M. Trautman.
The Buckeyes open their Big Ten
season at Bartlett kymnasium at Chi-
cago Saturday night, appear in Ann
Arbor against the Wolverines on
Mond1ay, Jan. 9, and then return to
Columbus to play the Illini on Jan.
14.
The pre-conference schedule has
produced satisfactory results in the
opinion of the Ohio State coaches.
During the holidays the Scarlet and
Gray quintet scored its signal
triumph by trouncing Dartmouth's
five, 23 to 22. A few nights earlier
it defeated Yale, 33 to 13, and Wit-
tenberg, 30 to 18. Earlier in the sea-
son Cincinnati and Ohio Wesleyan
beaten Trautman's men.

M A, Cl WILL OFFER REAL TEST FOR
VRSITY BAS5KETBALLTEAM TONIGHT
HEASLEY, FOSTER, GILKEY,
TO BEAR CLOSE WATCHING!
Crippled by the loss of Miller, Cap-
tain Rea and the fighting Wolverine
basketball five will take the floor to-
night against the strongest team M.
A. C. has sent against a Michigan court
team for a number of seasons. The
Aggies' performance in their pre-sea-
son games has been particularly im-
pressive as the Green and White toss-
ers heve won their last four engage-
ments. Alma, the latest Aggie victim
fell before the Farmer five Wednes-
day night at East Lansing by the score
of 43 to 17. The Aggie quintet had
little difficulty in scoring with amaz-
ing regularity while their defense kept
the Presbyterian college scoreless for
15 minutes of the opening half.
Heasley is Wonder
Captain Heasley, as in former
games, was the high scorer with 20
points from the field. Gilkey, Heas-
ley's running mate at forward, was re-
sponsible for nine counters while
Foster, the towering tip-off man, was
good for 12 points. The Alma contest
was the last game for the Aggies be-
fore their encounter with Michigan
tonight.
Coach Mather's men are undaunted
by the loss of Miller although his pres-
ence would throw an abundance of
confidence in the Wolverine camp.
Coach Mather has announced that
Captain Rea will be played at forward
and that to Cappon will fall the task,
of covering the elusive Aggie leader,
Heasley. Rea was originally a for-
ward but his speed combined with his
uncanny ability to score on long shots
has made his play at running guard
one of the shinning spots of the Wol-
verine- attack. In "Cappie" Cappon,
Mather has a player who will make
the Aggies work for every shot they
slip through the ring. Cappon is a
fast, clever guard, the kind of a play-
er Michigan uses in its five man de-
fense. Although Cappon is not equal
to Rea on the offense he falls little
short of the Michigan leader on the
defense.
Reason Is Other Forward
Reason will be Rea's running mate
at forward. Rex has shown steady
improvement in each contest. He has
a good eye for the basket and misses
few open shots. Birks will play the
back guard while to Ely will be dele-
gated the duty of stopping the much
heralded Foster. Birks has proven him-
self a comer in the pre-season con-
tests. He follows his opponents shots
and has been able to pick them off
the backboard before (the opposing
forwards are able to reach them.
Foster will have the physical advant-
age of height over Ely but if the Wol-
verine jump man plays as he did dur-
ing the vacation games he should be
the match of his rival.
Last Pre-Season Game
The game will give Mather's men a
real test before the opening Confer-
ence game Monday. The Aggies will
be accompanied by a number of root-
ers as the Green and White is out for
regenge after its two defeats of last
year, a trick no other Michigan team
has been able to administer to a Farm-
er five in any previous season.
