HUMBLED BY STRONG CINCY AGGREGATION, 31-17 Coach Mather is bending every ef- fort in conditioning the Varsity bask- etball team for its first hard struggle of the year Friday night against the strong University of Cincinnati five at Cincinnati. Last night the Wolverines practiced with the Detroit Y. M. C. A., and as a result of the scrimmage, Coach Mather will be able to correct some weaknesses the Varsity display- ed against the Detroiters. The Kal- amazoo Normal game was not a test of the Wolverines' strength for the Normal five was much weaker this year than it has been in past seasons. As a result, the Michigan five did not extend itself in downing its op- ponents. Ohio Falls Cincinnati, however, should prove to be a worthy contender as it gave evidence of its calibre against Ohio State when it defeated the Buckeyes 31 to- 17, a short time ago. One thing is certain and that is that the quintet from Cincinnati is in excel- lent shape for a battle. Against Ohio State it was unable to make much headway during the first half and was trailing the Buckeyes when half time was called, but after the opening of the second half they litterally smoth- ered the Scarlet and Gray attack aneI scored shots from every angle. If the Wolverines are able to hold this final spurt of the Cincinnatians they should take the game. Michigan has a pair of guards who are per- forming creditably and should be able to stop, the scoring of any pair of forwards. Captain Rea and Birks are the men Mather is depending upon to turn the trick and if the Wolverine forwards can penetrate the Cincinnati defense, Michigan's problem will be solved. Lack Forwards Mather has an abundance of good guards this season but his supply of forwards is causing him the most wor- ries. Cappon and Paper, men who were counted upon to encounter little opposition in the guard positions; are now on the bench but are threatening to. break into the game at any time. Ely has solved the center difficulties but Michigan's scoring machine will need improvement before the Confer- ence season opens. Centre And Notre Dame Meet Dec.26 Contrary to all other reports, Notre Dame will play Centre college at San Diego on Dec. 26. The announcement that the proposed terms of the San Di- ego chamber of commerce had been definitely accepted was made late Monday afternoon by the Notre Dame athletic board. However, the Notre Dame eleven will be compelled to play minus the services of three of its star linemen. Charges of professionalism were madr against Hartley Anderson, Arthur Gar- vey, and Fred Larson and after 4 thorough investigation by the board they were substantiated by proof. The loss of these three regulars will ser- iously hamper Notre Dame's chances for success against Centre college Practice sessions are again in vogue and the substitutes are waging a mer- ry battle for the three vacant berths Harding Will Donate Silver Cup President Harding is to give a cup to the winner of the intercollegiate winter sports meet to be held at the Lake Placid club, at Lake Placid, N. Y. , on Dec. 31. Only two represent- atives from each college will be allow- ed to compete in each of the events which will include the following, a four mile cross country ski race, a quarter mile skating race, a one mile skating race, and 100 yard ski dash, and a medley relay race. _i I I- CLASS MANAGERS, NOTICE All class athletic managers should report to the Intramural office at once for instructions re- garding the interclass basketball and bowling schedules.
