THE MICHIGAN DAILN -- C YPSILANTI CHOIR SINGS XMASMUI Background of Candles and Trees Gives Yuletide Spirit to Sunday Program UNIQUE EFFECT GAINED IN RENDITION OF CAROLS (By Sidney B. Coates) With groups of candles and Christ- mas trees suggestive of the Christ- mas spirit, as a background, the Ypsi- lanti Normal choir, Frederick Alex- ander conducting, gave a program of national Christmas music and gave it as only a carefully trained and en- thusiastic group can, in the assembly hall of the Union Sunday afternoon. Co-operation Marked First in excellence were the various carols from the Russian, German, French and Norwegian composers. Every number was marked by absolute co-operation on the part of the chorus members with the conductor, and the interpretative effects were worked out in each phrase and note. Among the Russian numbers "Gospodi Pomilui" by Lvovsky was both unique and ef- fective. The constant repetition of the two words seems to increase their solemnity as they are taken up in varying harmonies. Other numbers equally effective were Grier-'s "Ave Marns Stella" and two old French carols, "The Three Kings" and "Chan- son Joyeuse de Noel." Throughout the carols the chorus work was sustained and ing.these numbers were Mr. Kerr sang, the chorus furnished the background on which the solo work stood out effect- ive and clear in contrast. Sing Parts of "Messiah" The program ended with three se- lections from Handel's "Messiah." "And the Glory of the Lord" and the "Hallelujah Chorus" were up to the high quality of the rest of the pro- gram, but both of these numbers call for heavy bass and tenor sections which are not at Mr. Alexanders dis- posal. Carl Lindegren in the recita- tive and air for basso cantante sang MUSK EGON HIEARS in a way which pleased, but his voice . is not capable of the two massive se- YOST AT BANQUET lections chosen.
