THE MICHIGAN DAILY f ................. ................................................................S NEW RULES DISAPPOINT SPEED BOAT "WIZARO"1 (By Associated Press) Algonac, Mich., Dec. 8. - "Chris" Smith, the speedboat builder of Ai- gonac, is disappointed. "The Wizard," as he is generally known among pow- erboat enthusiasts, said during the Harmsworth gold cup regatta this year at Detroit that in 19,22 he would build a hydroplane capable of 100 miles per hour for Commodore Wood. Since that regatta, however, the American powerboat association by altering the rules governing the gold Under the revised rules the gold cup contest, has virtually eliminated cup event is expected to attract a that annual classic as a contest for large field of contenders of the run- speed, leaving the British internation- about type and develop a speed of al (Harmsworth) trophy contest as the from 35 to 40 miles an hour. Gar only primary speed race. Whether the Harmsworth event will be held in 1922 depends mainly upon the inclina- tion of foreign powerboat enthusiasts to challenge for the trophy now held by Gar Wood of Detroit. Disinclination of American power- boat men to compete with Gar Wood and his 80 mile an hour boats for the' gold cup trophy, led the American Powerboat association to revise the dules for that event, restoring it to competition by displacement craft. Chris Smith has built practically all of Commodore Wood's speedboats and has had the added interest in their per- formance given by the fact that his sons, Jay and Bernard, have handled the engines for Wood in all his con- tests. The Notre Dame ath- let board answered immediately and further action rests with San Diego. McDevitt, head football coach at Northwestern university for the last two years, left the Evanston campus Wednesday afternoon to re- turn to his home in Duluth, Minn., where he will resume his law prac- tice. It has been definitely settled that McDevitt will not return to Northwestern next year to coach the football squad. Coach McDevitt leaves with the best wishes of the students, faculty and alumni. In the two years he has been coach of the Northwestern teams he has won the liking and respect of everybody, and the only reason that he is leaving is to make room for a man who can be on the ground the year around. There is some doubt as to whether Knute K. Rockne will accept the of- fer of the position as director of ath- letics at Northwestern university ac- cording to Rockne's friends. Rockne has a five year contract at Notre Dame, three of which are unexpired. Since he is a graduate coach of Notre Dame and draws as large a salary from that institution as Northwestern has offered it is thought improbable ATHLETIC BOARD IN CONTROL MEETS AT.UNION TOMORROW The Board in Control of Athletics will meet at noon Saturday at the Union.
