OHIO TO BOAST STRING 1922GRIDIRON SQUAD LINE WEAK WITHOUT .VETERANS BUT BACKFIELDI TO BE POWERFUL (By Associated Press) Columbus, 0., Dec. 7. - Football, prospects for 1922 at Ohio State uni- versity are unusually bright.' Coach Wilce believes he will have a strong, veteran backfield, but be- cause of graduations will have to re- build his 1921 line, which was regard- ed as one of the speediest and most proficient in the country. ° As an offset to this handicap, how- ever, Wilce will be able to select prac- tically an entire new line from the most promising freshman squad in years. The Buckeye fresh team this fall has been of almost championship caliber, and Dn several occasions suc- ceeded in outplaying the veteran var- sity squad with plays used by other Western Conference elevens. Hoge Workman, who made an un- usual record in 1920 as a quarter- back and as a forward passer and who was disqualified from playing this sea- son because of conditions in his stud- ies, will be eligible to play again next year. His brother, Noel Workman, who played at quarter this year, also will return next year, as will Stuart and Isabel, two of the best halfbacks on recent Buckeye teams. Taylor. Weaver and Cott will leave the back- field through graduation. Taylor and Weaver alternated this season at full- back, and Cott was a second string quarter and halfback. Pixley, recognized as one of the best 'guards in the Western Confer- ence this year, and Young at Centre will be the only veteran linemen to return next season. Those lost by graduation will be Myers and Slyker, ends; Huffman and Spiers, tackles, and Dean Trott, guard. This! is remarkable in view of the fact that MacMillan has had no coaching ex- perience, having only finished his ac- tive college football career this fall. Magazine subscriptions. AGGIES SET Fl BUSy SEASION AT BASKETBALI PRE-SEASON GAME SCHEDULED WITH WISCONSIN AT MADISON (By Associated Press) East Lansing, Dec. 7.-Michigan Ag- gie basketball candidates have settled down to a steady grind of practice sessions in preparation for a pre-sea- son game with Wisconsin, Dec. 17. The regular schedule has nothing list- ed until after the holidays but the squad coaches are anxious that thel men who are to play on the varsity be selected prior to the game at Mad- ison. During the past week all the foot- ball players, who were members of last year's basketball quintet, or have aspirations to get on the team this year, reported for practice. Almost nightly there are 40 or more candi- dates on the job, and in less than two weeks the coaches hope to shear this crowd down to 10. That many men will probably be taken to Madison for the opening tilt. The first °game to be played here will be Dec. 29, with Carnegie Tech. The remainder of the schedule will be completed shortly and 18 games will probably be billed, including Notre Dame, Michigan, Creighton and Ober- lin. Communication Editor, The Michigan Daily: The rapid growth in the number of students here introduces certain puzzling problems. But the practice of solving such problems (the latest being that relating to indoor athletics) by decisions which unintentionally favor a class of students who have this world's possessions in abundance, will surely lead to an unfortunate in- crease in the number of those citizenb who hold that "the University is no longer a poor man's college but a rich man's school." The other part of the sentence conveyed notice to Ruth that he need not look for his split of the re- cent world series moneys amounting to $3362.26. That will go into the com- missioners strong box as will the money due Bill Piercy and Bob Meusel who went with Ruth on the barnstorm- ing trip. Notre Dame will play Georgia Tech. in the first of a series of two games, on the Georgia Tech. gridiron next year. The 1923 game will be played at South Bend. Centre college and Northwestern may engage in a football struggle at Danville, Ky., in 1922, if present plans materialize. More than 60 men have reported for the Harvard hockey team. A large number of last year's men are out and daily practices will be held from now on in the Boston arena.
