HIGAN DAILY £ ££A- _ y "WONDERl TEAM" OF CALIFORINIA MAY BATTLE WITH, IOWA OR W. AND J., lawkeyes Tentatively Champion East in Annual Tilt Selected Great tol PRESIDENTS NAMED TO PLAY IF BIG TEN DENIES CONSENT With the conclusion of the football season, the football world is turning to the annual New Year intersectional game at Pasadena between the East and West. The western representative is the University of California, on the face of the season's performance, but the eastern choice is a matter of con- jecture. Four undefeated teams stand out in the East, Penn State, Cornell, Wash- ington and Jefferson, and Lafayette. In the Middle West, Iowa - is, without doubt, the greatest machine. Penn State Strong Penn State, a formidable opponent for -any eleven, met the University of Washington at Seattle Dec. 3, and won only by the score of 21 to 7. This game was itself injurious to eastern football as Washington could scarce- ly be considered an opponent worthy of any second rate Pacific coast col-j lege team. California's wonder team trounced the Washington eleven by a 72 to 3 score using practically three teams. The varsity played in the first quarter, while the substitutes finished the game by running up 35 points against the Sun Dodgers in the last two quarters. Cannot Equal Bears Penn State, champions of the East, met the weakest team on the Pacific coast and managed only to win by a 21 to 7 score, while California, with its substitutes playing most of the game, defeated Penn State's opponent 72 to 3. Such men as the great "Kill 'em" Killinger, Redinger, Wilson, and Mc- Cull-um could not begin to perform against a team that the Golden Bears subs decisively defeated. "Brick" Muller, of California did not take part in the contest against the Washington team. Early this season Muller broke his leg and has been out of the game most of the season. But when California met the University of Southern California, "Andy" Smith sent Muller in long enough to hurl a few forward passes. Muller - threw from behind the goal line, protected by a pair of husky team mates be- cause it wouldn't coo to let him get bumped over, with his leg just out of a cast. Muller Greatest End Muller heaved a 60 yard diagonal pass that connected properly for a 40 yard gain. Again the teams lined up and with another "Muller pass", one of the most feared attacks of Pacific coast football, the play shifted and California scored a touchdown through the line. Coach Wilce says Muller is the greatest end the game has ever known. W. and J. Accepts Among the teams invited to oppose California are Cornell, Yale, Penn State, Iowa, and Washington and Jef- ferson. The last team mentioned wir- ed acceptance of the offer to Califor- nia Saturday, Dec. 3. Washington and Jefferson, one of the eastern leaders, faces a big task if she meets the California wonder team on New Year's day. If the Presidents win this ghme they will have a good claim to the college championship of the United States. If California wins, then the Golden Bear once more will growl its superiority over all other colleeg teams, and be claimed the champions of the college football world. (Editor's Note: The above article was received as a communication Monday. W. and J. has not been deti- nitely selected to opose California, as Iowa is the first choice of the Tour- nament of Roses committee. The Pres- idents have accepted a tentative invi- tation, but the Hawkeyes are yet to be heard from. The Daily Californian of Nov. 29 carries a story to the effect that Iowa will meet the Bruins if Big, Ten authorities will grant the neces- sary permission.)
