THE MICHIGAN DAILY _ ____ _. t Steve 'Farrell enthusiastic ,Oer Prospects For 1922 Track Squad "Michigan should have a good track team this year," said Steve Farrell, the veteran Wolverine track coach, in an interview yesterday morning. "Al- though there are no champions on the squad at present, prospects are bright enough to warrant my saying that we will have a well-balanced team, per- haps as strong as any in the Confer- ence this season. Of course," he quick- ly added, "that is barring ineligibili- ties. If the squad is hampered by in- eligibilities, it will be put in a rather hard way and things won't be quite so promising." This, in short, is the keynote of Coach Farrell's views in regard to Michigan's indoor track team, which is now i4 the making. Although Steve is not making any rash promises as to winning the Conference champion- ship, his general optimistic attitude 11l l1llii ili illlilil i i ii~ N !iliili!!!llililliilltlii!llii!!iliU!!il|11|1111111111111111111e AYRES & SMITH, English Caps IN THE NEW EIGHT PIECE SHAPE Ai --- -. _ I: DONAL11ON 711 N. The squad, at present, has all the aspects of a well-balanced aggrega- tion. The strength is evenly distri- buted throughout the dashes, shot-put, high jump, pole vault and hurdles with an acknowledged weakness in the distance. However, the coach has drafted several capable performers from the 1921 cross country outfit to correct his weakness, and, although this is a rather early time to judge, their steady improvement thus far has been quite satisfactory. Simmons Best in Big Ten In the 50 yard dash Captain Sim- mons stands out above any runner in Conference circles. At the Conference indoor championship meet last year he managed to cop first place quite handily and with his additional ex- perience this year he should easily repeat his performance. The other men who look promising in this eent are Kelly, who placed second in the Cornell meet last winter, Burke, Mar- tin, Goldwater and Harvey. In the 440 yard run Lewis and Join- er, both veterans, will be the depend- ables. Althought ex-Captain Butler will be greatly missed in this event, his absence will be partially offset by the availability of these two men in addition to Thomas, a member of the 1921 squad, Purdy. and Seymans, both of whom come from the yearling outfit. In the 880 yard run Douglas is the only veteran. Although he showed up fairly well last ytr he must show considerable improvement if he is to win his event. Hattendorf, Weeks, and Gibson are the other half-milers of promise on the list. Mile Weak Spot The mile unquestionably is weakest point on the squad. Standish is the best trackster in this run and he will be accompanied by Arndt, Bowen and Davis, all of whom come from the freshman squad. These men have plenty of hard work before them if they are to earn any points for their team. Chute, Penberthy, Wittemoe, Vandi- Viste and Marston, all of whom have been transferred from the cross coun- try team, will perform in the two- mile run. They should be able to garner several points in every meet. In the hurdles Sargeant should be the best point snatcher. He showed up well in all the dual meets last year and is conceded to be a hurdler of no mean ability. Aubrey and Schmidt are the other men trying out in this event. Walker, in the high jump, undoubt- edly is the peer of the Conference in his event. He won points, in every meet he entered last year and should prove a valuable asset to the team this year. McElvin, Smith and Ward are the other likely men in the jump.- Landowsk Back In the pole vault Landowski is the II most pomising of the candidates. In- eligibility kept him off the team last season and barring a failure in studies this semester he should prove a good performer.
