Are the great universities, with Michigan, as usual, "Champion of the West," fast becoming undemocratic? The question is worthy of serious dis-1 cussion and honest judgment. Taken broadly, it may be viewed from sev- eral angles. There is the co-edu- cational situation, the problem of the wealthy student in his relation to the' poor one, the relation of fraternity men and women toward those who are unaffiliated, and the character of Mich- igan's standing institutions, whether they are aristocratic in purpose and function, or whether they are pervad- ed by a wholesome democracy. "Down With the Co-eds l" The uncharitable assertion has been made in the past by callous males that democracy exists at Michigan in- versely as women students are pres- ent. In other words, co-education is directly opposed to democracy, and that elusive wraith could much more be cornered where men flourish in the invigorating association of their own kind, to the exclusion of all members of the opposite sex. If women must be educated beyond high school, it should be in women's colleges, say these he-men. In the words of Pres. Marion L. Burton, this also would be a fact if it were true. Actual comparisons be tween graduates of co-educational in- stitutions and those exclusively for, men and women, reveal the indubit- able fact that although no hard and fast line can be drawn, those coming from the former display, in consider- able degree, more democracy, after that term has been satisfactorily de- fined, than those from the restricted schools. The men students who howl hardest at the enervating presence of women on the campus would for the most part be first to complain if de- prived of their week-end dissipation at the Union and the Armory, or their idyllic Sunday afternoon rambles, a la mode, along the sheltered by-paths of the boulevard. Only Trouble Is Scarcity The chief problem presented by the women students, however, is that of their relative scarcity. During 1920- 21, only about one-fifth of the stu- dent body was composed of women. At first glance, this would seem to create a frightful situation. Imagine on Sunday afternoons every woman student strolling about with four man- ly males for escort! It is inconceiv- able-and equally untrue. A more common sight is that of one manly male flanked by two co-educationists. Truly an anomalous situation, but one that exists, and which is by every principle of representation as we un- derstand, it, truly democratic! It has been basely asserted that the majority of women who come to Michi- to pay part or all of their expenses. There is in no sense of the word a iine of demonstration socially between these students and those more favored by fortune. But in Michigan institutions is real democracy seen, for after all the insti- tutions have their signal effect upon the men and women of the University.
