Only the day previous Shaefer had defeated the vet- eran Sutton, and he was the favorite in his match with the Frenchman. However, he played only a mediocre game and Conti had little trouble in disposing of him. Willie Hoppe, the present champion, has defeated Sutton and has also taken a game from Conti. He has shown his old time skill in all his matches and no doubt will retain his hold on his title. Many men famous in the billiard world are taking part in this meet. Hoppe, Shaefer, Sutton, Cochran, Con- ti, Morningstar and Horemans are some of the names on the list. Morn- ingstar had little trouble in defeating Horemans, the Belgium cueist. This offer begins Nov. 14th and lasts until Jan. 14th, 1922 Two Weeks Layoff Has Put Gophers Eleven in Fighting Trim For Fray COACH YOST WILL USE PETRO IN POSITION LEFT BY DUNNE Dr. Williams and his squad of fight- ing Gophers arrived this morning for the final game of the year on Ferry field tomorrow afternoon. The Gop- hers are in the best condition they have been in since their early game with Northwestern which crippled Arnold Oss. The Northmen have had a two weeks' lay off and every cripple on the squad, with the exception of Oss, has rounded into playing condi- tion. Gophers Celebrate Minnesota will be able to throw a stronger front against the Wolverines tomorrow than the one which faced Iowa, in the Gophers' last Conference game, on Nov. 5. The Northmen held their last practice on Northrup field Wednesday, and celebrated the windup of their football training for the year by their usual custom of "burning the shoe." Arnold Oss joined in the jo1- fication by tossing his crutches into the flames. Oss is now using a cane and there is little possibility of his getting into the play. Minnesota stop- ped over in Chicago yesterday for a light workout. The Gopher mentor said that he hoped to take "the little brown jug" back to Minneapolis. A light workout on the Ferry field grid- iron is all the big team from the North will indulge in today. Minnesota has a powerful quartette of backfield men in Brown, Martineau, Gilstad and McCreery. McCreery did not break into the game against the Hawkeyes but is sufficiently recovered from injuries to open the game. Brown will pilot the eleven, Martineau at left halfback will do the punting and pass- ing while Gilstad will perform at full- back. Minnesota to Use Shift On the line Minnesota will probably use Cole and Moyle at ends, Captain Teberg and Johnson at tackles, M- Laury and Tierney at guards and Aa at center. Minnesota's famous shift will be seen working tomorrow as the Gop- hers execute every play from the shift. The Northmen'd numbers differ from the other Conference elevens in that they begin with 10 and run to 30. Michigan will start th farewell game minus the services of Capt. "Duke" Dunne., Dunne's injured arm will not permit him to get into the scrimmage. In "Duke's" place Petro will be seen. Petro is aggresive, and played a high- ly creditable game against Wisconsin after Captain Dunne had been forced out with his injured arm. He will be opposed by McLaury. Staley Muir- head will be pitted against Captain Te- berg of the Gophers. Both men have played strong games this year and a lively scrap should ensue. Goebel to Watch Cole Goebel will be stationed on the right flank to oppose Cole. If Bernie Kirk has recovered from the jolts he receiv- ed at Madison he will play on the op- posite wing against Moyle or Wallace. Curran and Clark Dean are first sub- stitutes for the end positions. Ernie Vick will oppose Aas. "Gob" Wilson will play his farewell -game against' Tierney, former Minnesota leader. Ed Johns will be assigned the task of watching Trig Johnson. Coach Yost will probably send Uter- itz, Cappon, Kipke and Roby in the backfield to open the attack. Steke- tee and Banks will probably be inject- ed into the play as both men were ground gainers in the Badger contest. Steketee went great on an open field during the first quarter of the Wiscon- sin game, while Banks was sent into the game in the final period, and show- ed that the injuries which have kept him out since the M. A. C. game, had not slowed up the dash he displayed last year and in the early contests this season. Every backfield man with the exception of "Eddie" Usher will be fit for the fray tomorrow.
