More exactly, this means that over 1100 students on the campus have applied for jobs that will enable them to work their way through college. Of this number it has been estimated by Mrs. Mary L. Stewart, in charge of the bureau, that 500 have not as yet been able to secure work while three or four applications are still being received daily for employ- ment of various kinds. Will Accept Anything Aside from the pressing situation created by the lack of work on the campus and the willingness of the ap- plicants to accept any kind of a job in order to obtain the money needed to defray current expenses in getting an education, it is of more than passing interest to notice the qualifications of the eleven hundred or so applicants. Jacks of all Trades There are 219 applicants experi- enced in office work, including ac- counting, book-keeping, statistical work, advertising, collecting and sten- ography. One hundred and seventy- eight have clerked in drug stores, shoe stores, men's clothing stores, dry goods stores and grocery stores. There are 146 with shop or factory experience, such as electrical work, mechanics, machine work, stationary engineering, plumbing, carpentry, tinsmithing, painting and decorating. There are 12 chemists, 43 men with draughting room experience, 19 surveyors, 3 sign painters, 4 printers, and 158 chauf- feurs. While the figures show a leaning to the industrial occupations, the do- mestic side of life is much in evidence with 3 nurses, 11 cooks, 10 bakers, 2 barbers and 12 attendants. Some Would Be Tutors Evidently many gained confidence from what they already have learned in university for 53 make applications to tutor in languages and the sciences. Five applicants confide that they have had experience in repotorial work and still willing to push the quill, while a like number are trained bible teach- ers. There are 47 musicians, playing nearly every instrument from the pipe organ to the flute.
