Eastern Football Coaches Oppose Use Of Middle Western Backfield Shift "At the Sign of the Flying Bee " Eastern football coaches have at- tacked the shift plays, employed by Western elevens, with such fury that a final ruling upon this style of play may result when the football heads 1' ~1. I U HEAR I-"DANGEROUS BLUES" 2-"I AIN'T NOBODY'S DARLIN"' BY "THE INSECT JAZZ HOUNDS" 90c - OUR SPECIAL SUNDAY DINNER - 90c get together. Chief among the opon- ents of the shift are Maj. Charley Daly of the Army and J. Foster Stanford of Rutgers. Teams coached by both of these Eastern gridiron1 mentors were the victims of Notre Dame's shifting offense last week. The Army has come to regard their annual fray with Notre Dame as a certain trouncing and Major Daly is loud in his protest against Coaclr Rockne's style of play. Coach Stan- ford, whose Rutgers eleven fell before Notre Dame 48 to 0 has taken issue against the West's offense and togeth- er with Major Daly is sponsoring a rule prohibiting the shift as an of- fensive weapon. Notre Dame Penalized In the recent game between Notre Dame and the Army the Western elev- en was penalized nearly 100 yards for alleged beating of the ball. Coach Daly wanted to change officials between halves, because they refused to pen- alize the Irish every time they used their shift. The Army mentor even came upon the field to protest, but the West Pointers were not penalized for this infringement of the rules. In the Rutgers contest Coach Stanford told the officials that eleven was not us- ing legal formations and that it' should be penalized five yards everyI time the backfield shifted. Had it not been for this constant penalization, Notre Dame would have won by even Eastern idea, there is not a team in this part of the country, employing the shift, that would not suffer heavy penalities. Chicago, Ohio State, Illi- nois, Minnesota and Michigan would have to change their style of play to conform with the Eastern notion. Andy Smith's California eleven, con- querors of Ohio State last year, and the strongest eleven on the coast, uses many complex shift formations. "The shift plays as employed by a number- of teams, Notre Dame partic- ularly, are illegal," Coach Stanford said. "They are contrary to the spir- it of the rules and give an offensive eleven a great advantage. Not only must the feet be stationary, but the bodies also must be rigid." Notre Dame Game Off As a result of the heated argument between Notre Dame and West Point players and Major Daly's attitude the intersectional contests between the Hoosiers and Cadets will be discontin- ued. Should the Eastern heads re- fuse to recognize the shift plays there will be difficulty in the future inter- sectional games. Negotiations between Western schools and the universities of the East are now pending for, con- tests next year. Legislation upon the disputed shift will be necessary if all of the games- are arranged. The West has become the recognized superior of the East in the last two years andsthe' shift has been an important cog in Western victories over its rivals. An unbalanced line with a shifted back- field has met with almost universal success.
